Otago Volts Team News & Playing 11

OTG Team News

Ben Raine’s arrival meant Christi Viljoen missed the last game due to Ben Cox already occupying one of the overseas slots. If Raine is retained to bolster the batting line-up, Otago could welcome Matthew Bacon back instead – he claimed career-best bowling figures of 4-31 against Auckland last time the two teams met.

OTG Key Players

Big-hitting Ben Raine has been brought in to bolster the batting line-up with Otago Volts lacking runs so far. Raine has one career century at T20 level – a 46-ball 113 in the 2017 T20 Blast – and has also collected 54 wickets in 48 previous T20 matches. Anaru Kitchen is the only Volts’ batsman to pass 100 runs so far with 127 in four innings.

Along with Kitchen, Hamish Rutherford has one half-century to his name and scored runs for New Zealand A against India A last month too. Bowling-wise, if Christi Viljoen – their stand-out bowler so far with seven wickets an economy rate of 5.77 – misses out, captain Jacob Duffy will look to add to his seven wickets in the tournament so far. Matthew Bacons is also pushing for a recall after taking his maiden four-wicket haul in the game against Auckland last season.

OTG Team Form

Otago Volts beat Canterbury Kings in their first game, as Hamish Rutherford scored 54 from 29 balls as the Volts’ reached 188/5 with three balls to spare in reply to 184/5. Anaru Kitchen then hit a half-century in a one-run win against Wellington Firebirds that owed much to Christi Viljoen’s 4-23 from four overs.

They have not won since, however, and have struggled for runs. They scored just 99/7 in a five-wicket defeat to Northern Knights and then, after their first game against Central Stags was abandoned, posted just 154/8 in reply to 208/7 in the reverse fixture – their most recent game.

Otago Volts Predicted Playing 11

  • Hamish Rutherford, Shawn Hicks, Anaru Kitchen, Nathan Smith, Ben Raine, Josh Finnie, Ben Cox, Matthew Bacon, Brad Wilson, Jacob Duffy, Jack Hunter

Auckland Aces Team News & Playing 11

AUK Team News

Colin Munro, Martin Guptill, Lockie Ferguson and Glenn Phillips could all return after being away with the New Zealand limited-overs squad which, if they did, would be a huge boost for the Auckland Aces. All four have played in this year’s tournament, but Ferguson and Guptill were the only ones to make a telling impact.

AUK Key Players

Without their New Zealand openers, runs have been in short supply for Auckland Aces. Even when Martin Guptill hit an unbeaten 71 from 51 balls in his one appearances, others fell cheaply as the Aces reached 111/5 to beat Central Stags by five wickets. He and Munro can be explosive at the top of the order, however – the latter scoring 13, 87 and 21 in his three ODI innings for New Zealand against Sri Lanka before adding 16 in the T20 win.

Lockie Ferguson’s only appearance so far in this year’s Super Smash brought figures of 2-14. Mitchell McClenaghan has taken six wickets, meanwhile – three each against Northern Knights and Canterbury Kings.

AUK Team Form

After their first game was washed out, Auckland won a low-scoring match next up – Martin Guptill the stand-out star with an unbeaten 71 in a five-wicket win, after William Somerville took 3-28 and Lockie Ferguson 2-14 to help restrict Central Stags to 107 all out.

Without their international stars, however, they have struggled. Bowled out for 110 in the face of Kyle Jamieson’s stunning bowling against Canterbury Kings, they lost by five wickets. And, last time out, they fell just two runs short of chasing Northern Knights’ 155/9.

Auckland Aces Predicted Playing 11

  • Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Craig Cachopa, Robert O Donnell, Ronnie Hira, Lockie Ferguson, Benjamin Lister, Matthew Quinn, William Somerville

Team Form in Last Five Matches (most recent first)

OTG vs AUK Head to Head

Auckland Aces have played 24 previous T20 matches against Otago Volts and have won 13 of them. Two games have ended without a result, while the Volts have won eight and a further one after super over. After a run of defeats in this fixture, the Volts claimed an overdue win when the two teams last met – Matthew Bacon with career-best T20 bowling figures of 4-31 to restrict Auckland to 139/9 before Derek de Boorder’s unbeaten half-century led the Volts to a two-wicket win with just one ball to spare.

Otago Volts vs Auckland Aces Prediction

If Auckland Aces do welcome back their international stars, they possess a potentially explosive batting line-up and a strong bowling attack. It has already brought them their sole win so far.
