New Zealand are favorites to win
New Zealand will take on Sri Lanka at the Hagley Oval, Christchurch. The First Test of the two-match series gets underway at 11:00 local time on Thursday 9th March.
After their historic win over England in the Second Test of the series to draw 1-1, New Zealand have chosen the same 13 players in their squad for this match. Kyle Jamieson is out injured with Ish Sodhi and Jacob Duffy also not selected.
Former captain Kane Williamson was the hero in the Wellington Test with 132 in the second innings as part of New Zealand’s total of 483. Tom Blundell (90) and Daryl Mitchell (54) also made valuable and crucial contributions with the bat and are in-form ahead of this Test.
The pace bowling trio of captain Tim Southee, the returning from patternity leave Matt Henry and left-armer Neil Wagner took nine of England’s second innings wickets in Wellington. All three will relish bowling on this surface in Christchurch.
New Zealand ended a seven game run without a win in this format with the memorable Test win in Wellington.
The visitors come into this Test series with a place in the 2021 - 2023 World Test Championship still available to them. It is unlikely but if they win both of the Tests in this series and Australia beat India in the Fourth Test then Sri Lanka will go through to the final.
Sri Lanka will look to their experienced players with the bat to produce the goods in this game. 35 year old Angleo Mathews, who has played 100 Tests and scored 13 hundreds will be key. Captain Dimuth Karunaratne was in excellent form in 2021 and will be looking to show similar numbers in 2023.
The quality of Sri Lanka’s spinners in home conditions is never up for debate but producing the goods on a green seam-friendly surface in Christchurch will be a far different proposition. Kasun Rajitha took his first Test five-wicket haul last year and he will be well suited to this pitch.
Sri Lanka have not played a Test Match since July but have won three of their last five games in this format.
The match will be played at the Hagley Oval, Christchurch. This pitch will have good pace and carry but will also have a green top which will assist the quick bowlers on both sides.

Although New Zealand came back from a huge first innings deficit against England last week, they got themselves in a poor position originally and Sri Lanka will take plenty of positives from this. Sri Lanka have the talent to challenge New Zealand but whether their players will be accustomed to the conditions is another matter. Our prediction is for New Zealand’s greater quality with the ball to be crucial. We are backing New Zealand to win.
