New Zealand Team News & Playing 11

NZ Team News

New Zealand were the first team to name their 15-man World Cup squad. Their key selection decision ahead of their opening game appears to be whether to open with Colin Munro or Henry Nicholls – the latter was promoted up the order for their final warm-up game. Matt Henry could be the bowler to miss out after coming in for some punishment in the defeat to West Indies in that second warm-up game.

NZ Key Players

Ross Taylor heads to the World Cup in supreme form in ODI cricket. The Wellington-born batsman scored one hundred and two half-centuries in the previous series between these two teams and that is just one example of the batting that has seen him climb to third in the ODI rankings.

Captain Kane Williamson is another key figure up the order, having proved his form with 67 and 85 in the two warm-up games.

Martin Guptill provides plenty of fire-power at the top of the order, meanwhile – he hit two centuries in the series with Bangladesh in February.

On the bowling front, Trent Boult is ranked second in the world in ODI cricket and took four wickets in each of the two warm-up matches to prove his form.

NZ Team Form

New Zealand started 2019 with a 3-0 ODI series win against Sri Lanka, with Ross Taylor leading the way with his excellent batting form.

The Black Caps came unstuck in their next series, however – suffering a 4-1 defeat to India. They were bowled out cheaply in all four defeats but their lone win was a notable one – skittling India for 92 on their way to an eight-wicket win, which took less than 15 overs to complete.

A 3-0 series win against Bangladesh, in which Martin Guptill hit two centuries, ensured New Zealand arrived in England in top form, however, and they continued that in the first warm-up game – Trent Boult ripping through India’s line-up as New Zealand claimed a six-wicket win.

The second warm-up saw West Indies post 421 on their way to a 91-run win against New Zealand, but the Black Caps still head into the World Cup among the potential dark horses.

New Zealand Predicted Playing 11

Martin Guptill, Henry Nicholls, Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor, Tom Blundell, Jimmy Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson, Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi

Sri Lanka Team News & Playing 11

SL Team News

Sri Lanka tore up their team sheet ahead of the World Cup, appointing Dimuth Karunaratne as captain and recalling a number of players who had not played ODI cricket for at least two years. Star man Lasith Malinga did not bow in either of the two warm-up games, but he will come into the bowling attack for the World Cup. Despite two defeats in those games, the top seven was the same for both and could stay settled for the early part of this tournament.

SL Key Players

While as a team, Sri Lanka are struggling at the wrong end of the world rankings, in Lasith Malinga they still boast one of the game’s most fearsome bowlers. In his final World Cup, Malinga – fresh from helping Mumbai Indians win the IPL – will be key with his slingy yorkers and death bowling.

Captain Dimuth Karunaratne was a surprise selection, let alone to lead the team, but he arrives at the World Cup in good form after scores of 77 and 87 against Scotland and South Africa.

The man he displaced as captain, Angelo Mathews, has a point to prove and has done that so far – he was named batsman of the tournament in Sri Lanka’s pronvincial One Day Cup and scored 64 in the match against South Africa.

SL Team Form

Sri Lanka have endured a tough run of results in the lead-up to this World Cup, including defeats in both of their warm-up games. They posted just 239/8 in a five-wicket defeat to Australia last time out, after being bowled out for 251 in reply to South Africa’s 338/7 in their first game.

Their most recent win was against Scotland, when they scored 322/8 on their way to a rain-impacted 35-run DLS-method win. It ended a run of eight straight defeats in series whitewashes against South Africa (0-5) and New Zealand (0-3).
