The first test between New Zealand and Australia at Wellington lasted a little less than four days. The visitors wrapped up the match with a sensational win by an innings and 52 runs. After winning the toss, Steven Smith put the Kiwis to bat and making full use of the fresh wicket, the Aussie bowlers skittled them out for just 183. Australia then went on to pile up a massive score of 562 which proved to be more than enough for New Zealand as they were bowled out in their second innings for 327.
The match was virtually over in the first two days itself as the hosts failed to recover from the early jolts. The two teams are now preparing for the second and the final test to be played at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch on 20th February. New Zealand will come out desperate for a win to draw level the series while Australia will be eyeing the coveted No. 1 spot on the ICC Test Rankings.

The primary concern for the Black Caps ahead of the second test will be their batting. Right from the start at the Basin Reserve, they were pushed on the back foot having lost 5 wickets in the very first session before lunch. None of the batsmen could score a half-century in the first innings. In second innings, Tom Latham's 63 and Henry Nicholls 59 were the only highlights. New Zealand will hope for their top order to click in the next game with huge expectations from players like Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson and skipper Brendon McCullum who will play his final international game for the country.
New Zealand's bowling line-up will not feature the pace attack of Doug Bracewell due to a shoulder injury he sustained in the first test. He could be replaced by either Neil Wagner or Matt Henry. Both these fast bowlers, however, have a chance to make it to the squad if Mark Craig gets dropped out due to his underwhelming performances of late. A stupendous batting display by Usman Khawaja and Adam Voges ensured that Australia didn't need to bat again in the match. Khawaja's 140 and Voges' 239 put an enormous pressure on New Zealand. A disciplined bowling effort from Peter Siddle and Josh Hazlewood left the Kiwi top order in shambles. Despite several match-winning performances, not all is well for Australia with Jackson Bird not performing up to the mark and Peter Siddle ruled out due to the back spasms he sustained in the previous game. Final Prediction:
After a comprehensive victory by an innings in the first test, it is Australia that looks to be the better of the two sides, at least in this format of the game. With only one match to go, the worst possible outcome for the Aussies would be a tied series at 1-1. With nothing to lose and pressure off of them, they have a much better chance in emerging victorious in the second test.
But it is also worth nothing that New Zealand have not been beaten in consecutive test matches since three years. Not long ago in the test series against England and Pakistan, they bounced back from a similar situation to draw the series level in the end. Also, being McCullum's final appearance for New Zealand, the Kiwis would like to give their beloved star a fitting farewell with a win.
Keeping all things aside, this is going to be a very intriguing contest between bat and ball. With the weather predicted to remain clear for the next five days and with a bowler-friendly pitch on our hands, the possibility of a draw looks bleak.
