Northern Cape are favourites to win
Northern Cape will take on Tuskers at Buffalo Park, East London. The first semi-final of the CSA Provincial T20 Cup 2022/23 begins at 10:00 local time on Saturday 8th October.
After their first two games against Border and South West Districts were abandoned without a ball bowled, Northern Cape beat Limpopo by 14 runs last Sunday. The result meant that Northern Cape finished top of Pool B with eight points.
The opening pair of Christoffel Klijnhans and skipper Ernest Kemm put on 47 for the first wicket in the win over Limpopo. Kemm top scored with 32 runs from 30 balls but there were also useful middle-order runs from Hanu Viljoen, Victor Mahlangu and Juan Landsberg.
Defending 143 runs for victory, Northern Cape restricted Limpopo to 128-4. There four separate wicket takers with Grant Thomson, Andrew Rasemene, Ernest Kemm and Romano Terblanche getting a wicket each. Benjamin Van Rensburg also impressed with figures of 0-18 from four overs.
Northern Cape produced a good performance against Limpopo but have not had much match-practice over the tournament.
With a record of one win and two defeats, Tuskers managed to qualify for the semi-final stage by only one point in Pool A. They got off to an excellent start in the tournament by beating Mpumalanga Rhinos before losing to South Africa U-19s and Eastern Storm.
Chasing a tough target of 181 for victory over Eastern Storm, Tuskers got off to a strong start and were 72-1 at the start of the ninth over. The top three of Michael Erlank, Thamsanqa Kumalo and Andile Mokgakane all scored over 22 runs with a strike-rate of at least 126.
The game against Eastern Storm was hard work with the ball for Tuskers’ bowlers, particularly for right arm fast medium Keith Dudgeon who conceded 48 runs from four overs. Alindile Mhletywa took 2-27 with Stefan Tait taking 1-21.
Tuskers had a convincing win in their opening match but have now lost successive games.
The match will be played at Buffalo Park, East London. We expect a par score of 140 on this wicket with a lack of pace in the pitch making scoring sixes quite hard.
