MLS vs SYS Betting Tips

  • Fifth-placed Melbourne Stars need to beat Sydney Sixers to secure the final semi-final spot in this year's Big Bash League.
  • They dropped out of the top four last time out, after Brisbane Heat scored 158/0 in ten overs in a stunning ten-wicket win to leapfrog them in the table.
  • Sydney Sixers are second in the table, having won eight of their 13 matches. They can secure a home semi-final if they avoid a heavy defeat.

Melbourne Stars Team News & Playing 11

MLS Team News

Sandeep Lamichhane returned to the team last time out, in place of Liam Plunkett, after his spell in the BPL and his Nepal international commitments ended. That was the only change from the defeat to Perth Scorchers but they may consider more this time after their bowlers took some punishment from the Brisbane Heat opening pair.

MLS Key Players

Marcus Stoinis is in stunning form for Melbourne Stars. Since returning from ODI duty with Australia, he has hit scores of 70*, 53, 43, 49 and 81 and also taken ten wickets in those five games. He now has 442 runs at an average of 63.14 from his ten games so far this season and 14 wickets at an average of 14.07.

Glenn Maxwell recaptured some form against Perth Scorchers, meanwhile, with 61 from 40 balls, and Ben Dunk is their second highest-scorer this season with 275 runs from 13 games.

With the ball, Dwayne Bravo also has 14 wickets, while Sandeep Lamichhane returns after taking eight wickets in his first stint in this season’s tournament before he headed to Bangladesh.

MLS Team Form

Melbourne Stars have lost their last two matches to jeopardise their hopes of a semi-final place, having won three in a row before that. Marcus Stoinis’ all-round form was key to that run of wins, having previously lost three in a row without him.

Against Melbourne Renegades, Stoinis took 3-19 and scored 70* in a six-wicket win, while he hit 53 in a total of 167 and then claimed 3-20 as Adelaide Strikers were bowled out for 123 in their next match.

Brisbane Heat were next up, and Stoinis scored 43 in a total of 134/8 before claiming 4-21 with the ball as the Heat finished five runs short on 129/8.

Stoinis’ form has continued since – he hit 49 and Glenn Maxwell scored 61 but 155/9 against Perth Scorchers was well short of the 183 they had been set. And, last time out, Stoinis’ 81 in a total of 156/8 ultimately counted for nothing as Brisbane Heat went ballistic in reply, winning by ten wickets in just ten overs.

Melbourne Stars Predicted Playing 11

Marcus Stoinis, Ben Dunk, Peter Handscomb, Glenn Maxwell, Nic Maddinson, Dwayne Bravo, Evan Gulbis, Adam Zampa, Jackson Bird, Sandeep Lamichhane, Tom O'Connell

Sydney Sixers Team News & Playing 11

SYS Team News

Sydney Sixers appear to have nine of their 11 places locked down, with Jack Edwards, Lloyd Pope and Ben Manenti competing for the other two over the past few games. Nathan Lyon’s availability probably locks out another position, however, and both Pope and Manenti could miss out against the Stars.

SYS Key Players

Daniel Hughes remains the Sydney Sixers’ top run scorer this season having scored 51* and 41* in his last two innings at the top of the order. He partnered James Vince (43*) to lead the Sixers to victory last time out.

Vince, who arrived to replace Joe Denly, has also scored 75 in the win against Brisbane Heat and 74* against Hobart Hurricanes.

Fellow Englishman Tom Curran has impressed with bat and ball, meanwhile. He took 2-32 in the win against Sydney Thunder last time out to move to 18 wickets in the tournament, while he has hit 175 runs at an average of 35 too.

Sean Abbott has 20 wickets for the season, meanwhile, after his 2-23 against Sydney Thunder and Steve O’Keefe’s economical 1-17 took him to 18 for the season with an economy rate of 6.73 runs per over.

SYS Team Form

A rain-affected win against Sydney Thunder took Sydney Sixers to four consecutive wins, as Daniel Hughes (41*) and James Vince (43*) led a revised chase of 84 from 12 overs – leading them to a nine-wicket win in 10.3 overs.

The winning streak started against Brisbane Heat, as James Vince scored 75 in a total of 177/7 and Tom Curran and Sean Abbott each claimed three wickets as the Heat folded for 98.

Vince then hit an unbeaten 74 next up, and shared a record-breaking 167-run partnership with Josh Philippe (86*) in a nine-wicket win chasing 173 to beat Hobart Hurricanes.

Ben Dwarshuis took 3-7 from four overs against Adelaide Strikers next up, as the Strikers set 124/8, and the Sixers needed just 14.1 overs to seal an eight-wicket win as Moises Henriques and Daniel Hughes scored unbeaten half-centuries.

Victory against the Thunder followed, lifting Sydney Sixers to second in the BBL 2018/19 table.

Melbourne Stars vs Sydney Sixers Head to Head

Melbourne Stars and Sydney Sixers have each won four of their nine previous games against each other, but the Stars edge the head-to-head having won the super over in their one tied match too.

The Stars ended a three-match losing streak in this fixture when they beat the Sixers earlier in this season's competition. Jackson Coleman claimed 3-18 as the Sixers posted 130/9 but Peter Handscomb's 70 from 35 balls ensured that score never looked enough - the Stars winning by five wickets with 31 balls to spare.

Melbourne Stars vs Sydney Sixers Betting Odds

Melbourne Stars remain favourites for this game despite their two heavy defeats, knowing they need a win to make the semi-finals. They are 1.72 to win with Bet365, who are also offering the best price of 2.10 on a Sixers' victory.

Evidently, Marcus Stoinis will be key for the Stars. He is 3.00 to be the Stars’ top batsman once again. You can also back him at 4.00 to be their top bowler, though Sandeep Lamichhane could also be worth a shout at the same price if he rediscovers his best bowling form.

For the Sixers, James Vince is in good form and can be backed at 4.20 to be their top run scorer after a string of impressive performances since his arrival in place of Joe Denly to inspire this current winning streak.
The Sixers also boast one of the best bowling attacks in this year's Big Bash League and Tom Curran (4.00), Sean Abbott (4.00) and Steve O'Keefe (5.00) could all be worth backing to be the Sixers' top bowler.

🏆 Melbourne Stars vs Sydney Sixers Prediction

Melbourne Stars are favourites to beat Sydney Sixers and no other result will do for them now as they look to snatch the fourth semi-final place.
