Who will win Melbourne Stars vs Perth Scorchers, BBL 2020?

In-form, table toppers Melbourne Stars will bid to keep their superb winning streak going when they welcome Perth Scorchers to the MCG on January 18. The match is set to start at 15:40 local time.

The Stars are looking for an eighth consecutive win, having maintained their excellent form by bowling Perth out for 86 in their most recent game. Marcus Stoinis – fresh from hitting 147* in a total of 219/1 against Sydney Sixers at the MCG – then led them to a comfortable eight-wicket win.

Perth Scorchers had won their three previous matches, but the Stars ended that in spectacular style last time out. There are positives though, including Josh Inglis top-scoring in their last two matches, and Mitchell Marsh finding good form with bat and ball too.

MLS vs PRS Toss Prediction

Perth elected to bat first when these teams met at Optus Stadium, but Melbourne Stars might be just as happy to bat first at the MCG.

MLS vs PRS Weather Report

There is a small chance of rain in the evening in Melbourne, given at around 20 per cent, but this game should be done by the time it arrives.

MLS vs PRS Pitch Condition

Melbourne Stars were outstanding with the bat last time out at the MCG, but it is generally a good, balanced wicket and much-improved after recent criticism.

Melbourne Stars Team News & Playing 11

MLS Team News

Jackson Coleman replaced Lance Morris last time out and took three wickets, while Nathan Coulter-Nile also returned to the team. It could be an unchanged 11 that takes on the Scorchers again, with Peter Handscomb and Adam Zampa on international duty.

MLS Key Players

Marcus Stoinis: His fine batting form continued as he hit 39* last time out to follow up his 147* from 79 balls in his most recent game at the MCG. He now has 475 runs in total.

Glenn Maxwell: Bowled one over and took a wicket and then did not bat, as he allowed others to find some form ahead of him in the order. The Stars captain has scored 187 unbeaten runs in his last four innings, however.

Sandeep Lamichhane: Having to step up with Adam Zampa away, the Nepalese spinner was at his very best last time out, taking 2-7 in three overs, during which he bowled 11 dot balls.

MLS Team Form

Melbourne Stars have now won seven BBL 2019-20 matches in a row. Their last match at the MCG was a batting masterclass led by Marcus Stoinis’ record-breaking 147* and an opening stand of 207 in 19.1 overs with Hilton Cartwright. Melbourne beat Sydney Sixers by 32 runs as a result. Then, last time out, it was the turn of the bowlers to thrive – Jackson Coleman taking there wickets and Sandeep Lamichhane two as they bowled Perth Scorchers out for 86 on their way to an eight-wicket win. The match only lasted 25.5 overs in total, such was their dominance.

Melbourne Stars Predicted Playing 11

MLS vs PRS Dream11 Prediction

Wicket-keeper

Josh Inglis’ form would likely have made him the best wicket-keeper option anyway, but that is especially so given Peter Handscomb is away. At 8.5 credits, Inglis is excellent value.

Batsmen

Liam Livingstone and Cameron Bancroft are both 9.5 credits, but you can only realistically afford one of the Scorchers given their inconsistent form and the fact you need to hold something back for the in-form all-rounders. With Cameron Green and Hilton Cartwright – the latter having opened for the Stars lately – both at eight credits, that is a good chance to save some credits.

All-rounders

Those all-rounders include Marcus Stoinis, who has actually played as a specialist batsman this season. But specialist he has been, hammering plenty of runs and amassing 710 Dream 11 points so far. Even at 11 credits, he can not be overlooked. Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell are 10.5 credits apiece but both have made their mark, especially with the bat but also with a handful of wickets.

Bowlers

On the bowling front, the cost of the all-rounders means you may have to choose between Chris Jordan and Haris Rauf at nine credits apiece. The latter has been a good find for the Stars this season. Jhye Richardson has 13 wickets to his name, meanwhile, and Sandeep Lamichhane was back to his best last time out – both are great value at 8.5 credits, though Fawad Ahmed and Nathan Coulter-Nile are alternatives worth considering. Leaving just eight credits, the choice then boils down to Jackson Coleman, Clinton Hinchcliffe or Joel Paris. The former took three wickets last time out.

Captain/Vice-captain

Marcus Stoinis’ superb batting form is showing no sign of slowing and he remains a top pick for captain, even if he is not bowling. Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh are good vice-captain options given both have picked up a few wickets to go with their runs too.

Perth Scorchers Team News & Playing 11

PRS Team News

Sam Whiteman missed the match at Optus Stadium as his wife gave birth to their second child – the only change from the previous two matches in which, without Ashton Agar and Ashton Turner, the Scorchers had still won both. Jaron Morgan made his BBL debut but Whiteman could return this time out.

PRS Key Players

Josh Inglis: Has overtaken Liam Livingstone as the dominant and in-form half of their opening partnership, scoring 51, 28, 73 and 37 in his last four innings. He was only the Perth batsman to get going last time out.

Mitchell Marsh: Previously in good batting form and, just as in other cases, when his batting fell short last time out he took a wicket instead – his fourth in as many matches.

Jhye Richardson: Could not add to his 13 wickets so far, after taking 4-19 in the previous game, but more economical bowling figures at least made the Stars work for their low target last time out.

PRS Team Form

Perth had won their three previous matches in a row before defeat to the Stars last time out. The Scorchers posted 175/7 in their most recent win, led by Josh Inglis’ 73, before Jhye Richardson ripped through the Hobart Hurricanes on his way to 4-19 – the Hurricanes folding for 98.

It was Perth’s turn to suffer a batting collapse last time out, however, despite Inglis hitting 37 from 19 balls. The Scorchers were all out for 86 and Melbourne Stars needed just 12 overs to wrap up an eight-wicket win.
