Melbourne Stars Team News & Playing 11

MLS Team News

Daniel Worrall repaid the faith shown in him in the semi-final by taking four wickets to justify his inclusion in the bowling attack ahead of Tom O’Connell and Jackson Bird. The Stars elected for an extra batsman last time out, with both Evan Gulbis and Seb Gotch featuring, and that tactic could be repeated in an unchanged team in the final.

MLS Key Players

Marcus Stoinis’ return from international duty was the catalyst for Melbourne Stars’ surge up the table. In seven innings since, his 18 last time out was his lowest score – he had previously scored 70*, 53, 43, 49, 81 and 34 to surge up the batting charts. He now has 494 in total for the tournament, as well as 14 wickets – ten of which have come since his return.

Glenn Maxwell took longer to get into his stride on his return from international duties but he too is flying now. He scored 61 against Perth Scorchers, hit 82 from 43 balls as the Stars beat Sydney Sixers to book their place in the semi-finals and then an unbeaten 43 to lead them to victory against Hobart Hurricanes last time out. He now has 330 runs from 11 innings.

Sandeep Lamichhane is back in the side now too, having started the tournament with the Stars before a stint in the BPL and international commitments with Nepal too. He claimed 3-11 in the final league game.
Their bowling hero last time out was Daniel Worrall, however. His 4-23 from four overs, including 12 dot balls, earned him the man of the match award. He also took 2-24 in the final league game. Dwayne Bravo is their leading wicket-taker, meanwhile – the West Indian has taken 15 so far, one more than Stoinis.

MLS Team Form

Melbourne Stars’ semi-final place was in jeopardy after two consecutive defeats but they have re-found their winning touch at the perfect time. After three wins in a row following the return of their international players, the Stars fell short against Perth Scorchers despite Glenn Maxwell’s 61 and 49 for Marcus Stoinis. Replying to 182/3, they could only reach 155/9.

Stoinis then smashed 81 from 51 balls in a total of 156/8 against Brisbane Heat, but they were blown away by the Heat openers – falling to a ten-wicket defeat in just ten overs.Needing to beat Sydney Sixers to stay in the tournament, however, they did just that – Maxwell hit 82 from 43 balls in a total of 168/6 before the bowlers obliterated the Sixers. Sandeep Lamichhane took 3-11 and the Sixers were all out for 74.

That earned Melbourne a semi-final with first-placed Hobart Hurricanes, but the Stars bowled well – Daniel Worrall taking 4-23 as they restricted the hosts to 153/7. In reply, Maxwell’s unbeaten 43 and a fifth-wicket partnership with Seb Gotch led them to victory – they won by six wickets with seven balls to spare.
