Melbourne Stars Team News & Playing 11

MLS Team News

Wicketless in his last two matches, Scott Boland's place could be in danger for the Melbourne Stars with Michael Beer pushing for a recall. Jackson Bird was given the nod over Beer for the match against Adelaide Strikers as the Stars opted for an extra paceman. The Stars have been hit hard by international call-ups, losing Peter Handscomb, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zampa to the Australian ODI squad. Sandeep Lamichhane, one of their best players early on, has ended his Big Bash League stint to head to the Bangladesh Premier League too.

MLS Key Players

Ben Dunk has hit 62 and 20 in his last two innings, stepping up in the absence of the Stars' Australian internationals, while Evan Gulbis has hit 37 in each of those two games opening the batting.

They now need Nic Maddinson - the new Stars captain - back in form after recovering from injury. He leads a middle order that also includes Dwayne Bravo. Bravo has nine wickets in the tournament so far and the West Indian all-rounder hit 33 for the Stars against Adelaide Strikers last time out too.

Liam Plunkett is their other overseas player, replacing Sandeep Lamichhane, and the Englishman took 4-36 from his four overs last time out as he gets back into the swing of things. He has six wickets in three games now, having also taken one for England in their win in Sri Lanka in October.

MLS Team Form

Melbourne Stars lost their first two games but won three in a row until being hit by international call-ups. Peter Handscomb's 70 from 35 balls led them to a comfortably five-wicket win in reply to 130/9 against Sydney Sixers to start their winning run, before a Melbourne Derby win on New Year's Day that owed much to 78 from 49 balls by Marcus Stoinis in the pursuit of 150 - the Stars winning by seven wickets.

Glenn Maxwell top-scored with 41 from 31 balls in an eight-wicket thumping of Sydney Thunder, who had set them just 136 to win, but Maxwell, Handscomb, Stoinis and Adam Zampa all received international call-ups.

In their place, Ben Dunk hit 62 from 47 balls against Perth Scorchers, but the target of 147 proved well below par. And, last time out, the Stars fell well short chasing 178/5 (Liam Plunkett having taken 4-36). The reply never really got going, especially once both openers were out, and they were all out in the final over for 137.

Melbourne Stars Predicted Playing 11

Ben Dunk, Evan Gulbis, Nic Maddinson, Jonathan Merlo, Seb Gotch, Dwayne Bravo, Nick Larkin, Liam Plunkett, Liam Bowe, Jackson Bird, Michael Beer

Hobart Hurricanes Team News & Playing 11

HBH Team News

With Tim Paine away on international duty - replaced as captain and wicket-keeper by Matthew Wade - Hobart Hurricanes have fielded an unchanged team in all six matches so far. With D'Arcy Short and Ben McDermott not in the Australian ODI squad they can continue to do so too, having opted not to replace injured English fast bowler Tymal Mills too.

HBH Key Players

Along with Jos Buttler, D'Arcy Short is one of two batsmen to have passed 250 runs so far, hitting three half-centuries. His score of two against Melbourne Renegaded was his first failure, having scored 67, 34, 58, 34 and 64 in his five previous innings and taken four wickets with the ball too.

Matthew Wade has 190 runs and a top score of 85 against Sydney Thunder, as well as 52 against Melbourne Stars when these sides last met. George Bailey, who top-scored in the defeat to Melbourne Renegades with 70 from 53, and Ben McDermott (50 from 43), who he shared a 102-run partnership with, provide middle-order runs, meanwhile.

Both James Faulkner and Jofra Archer went wicketless last time out, but they have ten and seven wickets so far, respectively. Archer took 3-25 from his four overs when these two teams last met.

HBH Team Form

After winning their first five matches, Hobart Hurricanes lost to Melbourne Renegades last time out to end their perfect start.

D'Arcy Short and Matthew Wade have been central to their success, with Short hitting 67 from 52 balls in a 15-run win against Brisbane Heat - James Faulkner claiming 3-25 as the Heat were bowled out for 144. Wade, meanwhile, scored 52 from 37 balls when the Hurricanes successfully chased 156 to beat Melbourne Stars by six wickets when they last met.

Wade was the Hurricanes' top scorer again in a seven-wicket win against Sydney Thunder, posting 85 from 49 balls in a seven-wicket win, helping them reach 196/3 in the final over. Their next win owed much to the bowlers, meanwhile - Riley Meredith taking 3-15 and Short and Faulkner two wickets apiece to restrict Perth Scorchers to 107/8, which they chased for the loss of four wickets with 2.3 overs to spare.

Faulkner took three more wickets against Sydney Sixers, who posted 161/8 in Hobart, but another Short half-century saw them win by five wickets with just one ball to spare. The fantastic run finally ended last time out, however. George Bailey top-scored with an unbeaten 70 in a total of 145/5, but Melbourne Renegades won by six wickets in the final over.

Hobart Hurricanes Predicted Playing 11

Matthew Wade, D'Arcy Short, Alex Doolan, Ben McDermott, George Bailey, Simon Milenko, James Faulkner, Johan Botha, Clive Rose, Jofra Archer, Riley Meredith

Melbourne Stars vs Hobart Hurricanes Head to Head

This will be the tenth T20 match between these two teams, and Hobart Hurricanes have only won three of the previous nine - losing the other six. After Melbourne Stars won both matches last season, one of those three Hobart victories on Christmas Eve in this year's competition. First, Jofra Archer claimed 3-25 from four overs to restrict the Stars to 155/5, then Matthew Wade hit 52 from 37 balls as, despite Sandeep Lamichhane taking 3-24 from four overs, the Hurricanes won by six wickets with eight balls remaining.

Last season, Melbourne successfully chased on both occasions - despite Tim Paine scoring 91 from 61 balls and sharing a 145-run fourth-wicket partnership with George Bailey (74* from 46 balls) in the Boxing Day game at Hobart. Melbourne reached 191/3 in just 17.4 overs to claim a seven-wicket win in that game, and then chased 185/7 to win by three wickets in the final over a month later.

For Melbourne, with so many big names away Ben Dunk has excelled instead - one of few highlights in the last couple of games. He is 4.20 with Betfair to be their top scorer.

🏆 Melbourne Stars vs Hobart Hurricanes Prediction

Hobart Hurricanes started the tournament in blistering form and one poor result does not change that. Melbourne Stars, without their Australian internationals, are underdogs for this one.

Final Verdict: Back Hobart Hurricanes to beat Melbourne Stars at 1.57 with Betfair and 1.53 with Bet365.
