Melbourne Stars, when they win the bat flip, prefer to field first – they were put into bat in a rare lost bat flip last time out.
Read on for team previews, betting tips, latest odds and match prediction for Melbourne Stars vs Brisbane Heat, BBL 2018-19.
With the quartet of Peter Handscomb, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zampa all available again, Melbourne Stars have been unchanged for their last two games and could stick with the same, winning line-up for a third game in a row against Brisbane Heat. If there is a change, it is likely to be Scott Boland – back from playing for the Cricket Australia XI but overlooked last time out – in place of Tom O’Connell, who did not bowl against the Adelaide Strikers.
If Marcus Stoinis’ importance to this team was not already known, he has proved it with three wickets in each of his two games since coming back – taking 3-19 and 3-20 on his return from the Australian ODI squad. His unbeaten 70 against the Melbourne Renegades was followed by 52 opening the batting, meanwhile. He now has 234 runs and ten wickets in his last four matches in Big Bash League 2018-19.
Stoinis shared a 113-run opening partnership with Ben Dunk, who finished 72 not out from 53 balls. Dunk previously scored 102 runs in the three games the Australian internationals missed – providing a small highlight in an otherwise frustrating three games for the Stars.
Of the other players back, Peter Handscomb scored 151 runs in the three ODIs for Australia against India, and added 36 for the Stars against Adelaide last time out. Glenn Maxwell’s big hitting in this format is well known, meanwhile – he has a strike rate of 156.57 in T20 cricket.
Away from the Aussie internationals, Liam Plunkett claimed 3-21 last time out after 2-21 in the Victoria derby. He has 11 wickets from six appearances in total. Fellow overseas player Dwayne Bravo took 3-22 against Adelaide, meanwhile, and has 13 from ten games in total.
After losing all three matches they played without their international quartet, Melbourne Stars have got back on track with two wins in a row. A score of 146/6 was below par against Perth Scorchers – losing by six wickets with 14 balls to spare – and they were bowled out for 137 by Adelaide Strikers and 126 against Hobart Hurricanes in their next two games.
The internationals were back for the Victoria derby, however. Marcus Stoinis claimed 3-19 as the Melbourne Renegades were bowled out for 121 and then top-scored with an unbeaten 70 as he led the Stars to a six-wicket win.
And Stoinis was an all-round star last time out too. He took 3-20, while Liam Plunkett claimed 3-21 and Dwayne Bravo 3-22 as Adelaide Strikers were bowled out for 123 in reply to 167/2. Earlier, Stoinis had hit 53 and shared a 113-run opening stand with Ben Dunk (72*).

Joe Burns, Marnus Labuschagne and Matthew Renshaw are in the Australian test squad, though Renshaw could be released to play for Brisbane Heat having not been selected in the playing XI. Alex Ross played against Sydney Sixers last time out, while Sam Heazlett has been in the squad too and Jack Prestwidge has played the last two games.
Josh Lalor’s career-best T20 figures of 5-26 in the match against Sydney Sixers last time out were overshadowed by the Brisbane Heat’s batting collapse, but it does take him to ten wickets in this year’s tournament so far.
It was a rare highlight with the ball, with wickets not flowing otherwise. Mujeeb Ur Rahman moved to eight wickets after the Afghani spinner claimed 1-25 against the Sixers, while all-rounder Ben Cutting has seven wickets and top-scored with 28 in the dismal batting effort.
With the bat, Chris Lynn has 319 runs from nine innings, including three half-centuries, while Brendon McCullum has also hit three 50s and has 232 runs in the same time. Brisbane’s “Bash Brothers” have been their undoubted batting stars, while Max Bryant has offered support up the order with 197 runs and a strike rate above 150.
Brisbane Heat lost their first three games, won three of their next four, got fortunate with a power cut – having been under the cosh when their game against Sydney Thunder had to be called off – and then lost last time out to Sydney Sixers.
Against the Sixers, Josh Lalor took a career-best 5-26 with the ball but, chasing 178 to win, Brisbane scored 98 all out from 18.1 overs to lose by 79 runs. They had been in trouble the previous game too – 10/2 from three overs with Chris Lynn and Brendon McCullum both out already in reply to 186/4 – when the power failure in Brisbane forced an early end and no result.
It was a far cry from the dominant display in their game before that, when McCullum hit 69 and Lynn 66* in a total of 192/4 against Melbourne Renegades. In reply, Brendan Doggett and Mitchell Swepson took three wickets each and the Gades were all out for 91 in 17.5 overs.

Brisbane Heat have won six of their eight previous matches against Melbourne Stars, including the last five in a row. This is their first meeting this season, but last season’s game at the MCG saw Chris Lynn (63*) and Brendon McCullum (61) put on 101 for the first wicket as the Heat reached 144/1 from 14.4 overs in a nine-wicket win; Mitchell Swepson’s 3-14 had earlier helped restrict the Stars to 141/7. They had previously posted 206/7 thanks to half-centuries from Joe Burns and Alex Ross in a total of 206/7 which the Stars could not chase despite 99 from 51 balls from Marcus Stoinis in a total of 191/6.
With their star players back, Melbourne Stars are 1.72 with Bet365 to beat Brisbane Heat and 1.73 with Betfair. The Heat are a best price of 2.20 with Bet365 to win.
Marcus Stoinis has been key on his return, with wickets and runs, and he is 3.75 with Bet365 to be the Stars’ best batsman. He is 4.50 to be their top bowler and a best price of 8.00 to be named man of the match.
For Brisbane, they will need Chris Lynn firing if they are to challenge the Stars. Their leading run scorer so far is a best price of 3.25 with Bet365 to be their top batsman. Brendon McCullum is 4.00.
Melbourne Stars look a totally different proposition now their internationals have returned. They can beat Brisbane Heat despite their poor record in this fixture.
Final Verdict: Back Melbourne Stars to beat Brisbane Heat at 1.73 with Betfair and 1.72 with Bet365.
