Melbourne Renegades are favorites to win

Who will win Melbourne Renegades vs Sydney Thunder, BBL 2019?

This match sees the reigning champions, the Melbourne Renegades, face off against one of last year’s underperformers, Sydney Thunder. The reigning champs have strengthened what was already a very strong side and will be hoping to retain their title this time around. Sydney Thunder’s chances, although finishing 6th last year, are hard to predict, given the huge turnover their line-up has undergone. Whilst Sydney Thunder may have improved their side from last year it may take a few matches to get up and running while Melbourne Renegades should be able to pick up where they left off.

MLR vs SYT Toss Prediction

Recent T20 matches at the Simonds Stadium, Geelong, have favoured the teams that fielded first with relatively low scoring matches played here. There will also be a fresh wicket with lots of pace and movement for the first few overs. Based on this, despite the dry conditions, the team that wins the toss will likely opt to field first.

MLR vs SYT Weather Report

The weather is predicted to be sunny and very hot, with temperatures souring as high as 39 degrees Celsius. The afternoon will bring a gentle breeze and there is virtually no chance of rain.

MLR vs SYT Pitch Condition

The match will be played at Simonds Stadium, Geelong. The wicket will be fresh and as such will likely have lots of pace and movement for the bowlers. The team first in at the crease will need to be vigilant and bat defensively for the first few overs to avoid any cheap wickets.

Melbourne Renegades Team News & Playing 11

MLR Team News

The defending champions see a few changes from their Big Bash League winning side of 2018/19. Tim Ludeman, Chris Tremain, Cameron White and Usman Shinwari all depart, while they welcome Shaun Marsh, Richard Gleeson and Jake Fraser-McGurk to their ranks. Incoming Marsh will add to an already potent top order including Aaron Finch and Macus Harris.

MLR Key Players

The Renegades have a wealth of talented openers to choose from, including; Captain Aaron Finch, Marcus Harris, Sam Harper (who has played very well in warm-ups) and recent acquisition from the Perth Scorchers, Shaun Marsh. The latter boasts a BBL average of 49.8 and will add to an already dangerous batting line-up.
Mohammad Nabi, Tom Cooper, Beau Webster, Dan Christian and Will Sutherland are all very capable all-rounders, a strength which was instrumental in helping them claim their first ever BBL title in 2018/19.

MLR Recent Form

It’s hard to know if the Melbourne Renegades will live up to the standards they set last time out but they’ve added some talented players to their line-ups and if they can recapture some of their form from the BBL, they will be a tough prospect.

Melbourne Renegades Predicted Playing 11

Sam Harper (wk), Aaron Finch (c), Shaun Marsh, Marcus Harris, Tom Cooper, Dan Christian, Will Sutherland, Cameron Boyce, Kane Richardson, Richard Gleeson, Harry Gurney

Sydney Thunder Team News & Playing 11

SYT Team News

Sydney Thunder have a relatively new look line-up for BBL 2019/20 with lots of ins and outs. Fawad Ahmed, Jos Buttler, Joe Root, Patrick Cummins, Ryan Gibson, Liam Hatcher, Kurtis Patterson, Sam Rainbird, Shane Watson, Anton Devcich and Chris Jordan all depart with Brendan Doggett, Alex Ross, Chris Tremain, Oliver Davies, Alex Hales (of England) and Chris Morris all incoming.

SYT Key Players

Captain Callum Ferguson is in form and will be one to look out for and classy batsman Usman Khawaja will add further steel to the top order. Chris Tremain, who has a great bowling economy and T20 specialist, Chris Green, will form the spearhead of Sydney Thunder’s attack.

SYT Recent Form

With such a changed team representing Sydney Thunder, its virtually impossible to know how they will play. Sydney Thunder finished 6th in the rankings in the last BBL and will be disappointed overall with their performances, having lost 7 of their 14 matches. However, they’ve made lots of changes and it remains to be seen if they will improve upon their performances last year.

Sydney Thunder Predicted Playing 11

Alex Hales, Usman Khawaja, Callum Ferguson (captain), Matt Gilkes (wk), Jason Sangha, Alex Ross, Daniel Sams, Arjun Nair, Chris Morris, Chris Green, Chris Tremain

🏆 Melbourne Renegades vs Sydney Thunder Prediction

It’s hard to look past the Melbourne Renegades for this match. The reigning champions were excellent in the BBL 2018/19 and have only added to their already strong line-up. Sydney Thunder endured a frustrating campaign last time out and have made a large number of changes to their roster as a result. They are a bit of an unknown given the degree of change to the line-up and could take a few matches to get up to speed though the bookies clearly rate their chances following their reshuffle. Tough match to call but Melbourne Renegaded have done it before and should do it again.
