Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings IPL 2020
Defending champions Mumbai Indians and last year’s runners-up Chennai Super Kings rekindle their rivalry as the 2020 Indian Premier League finally gets underway. Moved to the UAE, the tournament starts with this high-octane clash at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on September 19 and the live action is scheduled to start at 19:30 local time.
Mumbai Indians won a thrilling final last year, securing a one-run win against the Super Kings, and Rohit Sharma’s team are among the favourites again for the IPL 2020 season, as they bid for a fifth title. They will be without all-time top wicket-taker Lasith Malinga but they have otherwise strengthened well and have the firepower to start this tournament with a bang.
Chennai Super Kings, on the other hand, have had a disrupted start with Suresh Raina’s withdrawal and now Ruturaj Gaikwad’s unavailability on medical grounds. If the IPL refuses to budge on Josh Hazlewood and Sam Curran’s availability too, they could be a little depleted for this opening game – and Mumbai may well have the edge as a result.

MI Team News & Playing 11
Mumbai Indians Team News
While he lacked form at the Caribbean Premier League, new signing Chis Lynn could slot straight into the Mumbai Indians team in a top three with Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock. Lasith Malinga has ruled himself out of the tournament.
Mumbai Indians Key Players
- Rohit Sharma: Hit half-centuries in each of his last two T20i innings at the start of the year and if he can get back to the form he was showing, he will once again be among the top scorers.
- Quinton de Kock: The big-hitting opening batsman hit 529 runs last season, including four half-centuries, and he remains integral to Mumbai’s batting.
- Jasprit Bumrah: Lasith Malinga will obviously be missed, but Bumrah was Mumbai’s top wicket-taker last season and his excellent economy rate is another reason he is so revered.

Chennai Super Kings’ disrupted preparations include Suresh Raina’s withdrawal, while Harbhajan Singh has dropped out too. Furthermore, Ruturaj Gaikwad is unavailable for IPL 2020 due to medical guidelines and Josh Hazlewood and Sam Curran may not be permitted to play the first matches unless the IPL softens their stance on the players travelling over from the England vs Australia series.
Chennai Super Kings Key Players
- Shane Watson: Difficult to ignore even if he was inconsistent last season. He still hammered 80 from 59 balls when these teams last met scored his 50th T20 half-century during the Pakistan Super League earlier this year.
- Imran Tahir: Absolutely key with the ball wherever he plays, the South African leg-spinner is another evergreen veteran, who arrives fresh from some top bowling form at the CPL.
- Dwayne Bravo: Fit again and fresh from taking his 500th career wicket in T20 cricket, he is another that epitomises Chennai’s reliance on experience.
Chennai Super Kings Team Form
Chennai Super Kings fell just short chasing 150 to beat Mumbai in last season’s final as they narrowly missed out on a second consecutive IPL title. Shane Watson hit 80 from 59 balls but was dismissed in the final over as the Super Kings fell narrowly short.

MI vs CSK Head to Head
Last year’s final was Mumbai’s fifth consecutive win against Chennai Super Kings – a run that includes the first qualifier and both league matches last season too. Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling was the key, as he claimed 2-14 to nullify Shane Watson’s 80 in the final as Chennai hit 148/7 in reply to 149/8.
