Lahore Qalandars vs Quetta Gladiators, PSL 2021

Last season’s runners-up, Lahore Qalandars, will bid for a second win in as many games at the start of the 2021 Pakistan Super League when they take on Quetta Gladiators. They two teams meet at the National Stadium, Karachi, on February 22 and the live action starts at 19:00 local time.

The Qalandars, who lost to Multan Sultans in last season’s final, had Shaheen Afridi to thank for their opening win against Peshawar Zalmi. In a fiery bowling spell, Afridi took 3-14 to restrict Peshawar Zalmi to 140/6, and the Qalandars claimed a four-wicket win with nine balls to spare.

Afridi should be relishing the chance to now take on a fragile Quetta Gladiators’ batting line-up, who were bowled out for just 121 in their opening game. They suffered a seven-wicket defeat to Karachi Kings, with the defending champions only requiring 13.5 overs to get home despite Mohammad Hasnain’s 2-18.

Lahore Qalandars Team News & Playing 11

LHQ Team News

Haris Rauf’s absence is a blow for Lahore Qalandars, who were also without Dilbar Hussain last time out. Salman Mirza took two wickets, while Ahmed Daniyal bowled rapidly but was expensive. Both could keep their places in the starting XI.

LHQ Key Players

  • Rashid Khan: Conceded just 14 from his four overs to keep the brakes on the Zalmi innings, before leading them home with 27* from 15 balls with the bat.
  • Shaheen Afridi: Last season’s top wicket-taker moved straight to the top of this season’s charts too as he claimed 3-14 last time out.
  • Mohammad Hafeez: The veteran anchored the Qalandars’ chase last time out, scoring 33* from 26 balls.

LHQ Team Form

Lahore made a winning start to the PSL 2021 as Shaheen Afridi (3-14) starred with the ball, and Mohammad Hafeez (33*) and Rashid Khan (27*) sealed a four-wicket win with nine balls to spare against Peshawar Zalmi. Rashid’s 15-ball innings got them out of a tricky spot to reach 143/6 and claim victory.

Quetta Gladiators Team News & Playing 11

QTG Team News

Chris Gayle was at number three last time out, with Sarfaraz Ahmed partnering Tom Banton at the top of the order. Though it did not pay off last time out, Gayle has definitely found his position at three and could continue there.

QTG Key Players

  • Tom Banton: Only lasted three balls last time out, but he will be dangerous at the top of the order if he fires, as his strike rate shows.
  • Mohammad Hasnain: In a losing cause last time out, he still showcased some excellent bowling up the order as he claimed 2-18 from his four overs.
  • Chris Gayle: The veteran West Indian showed his recent resurgent form has not yet ended as he hit 39 from 24 balls last time out.

QTG Team Form

After missing out on the play-offs last season, Quetta Gladiators got off to a losing start this time too. They were all out for 121 and, despite Mohammad Hasnain’s 2-18 from four overs, Karachi Kings needed just 13.5 overs to secure a seven-wicket win.

Lahore Qalandars vs Quetta Gladiators Top Team Batsmen

Lahore Qalandars had Mohammad Hafeez to thank for their win last time out, as he anchored the chase. Captain Sohail Akhtar and Fakhar Zaman were at the top of the order, while Ben Dunk is key in the middle order. Zaman is favourite to be their top team batsman.

After showing his form again last time out, Chris Gayle is favourite to be Quetta Gladiators’ top team batsman for a second consecutive match. Opening pair Tom Banton and Sarfaraz Ahmed are other options to consider.

Fakhar Zaman is favourite to be Lahore Qalandars at the top of their batting order, but Mohammad Hafeez was top team batsman last time out and could be worth backing again. They also have Sohail Akhtar up the order. Rashid Khan is an outsider, but his form last time out was a reminder that he is more than just a bowler.

For Quetta Gladiators, meanwhile, Chris Gayle was top team batsman in their opening game and is favourite to do so again in this match. Opening pair Tom Banton and Sarfaraz Ahmed are next on the list.

Lahore Qalandars vs Quetta Gladiators Top Team Bowlers

After his outstanding bowling last time out, Shaheen Afridi is now favourite to be Lahore Qalandars’ top team bowler, ahead of Rashid Khan. With Haris Rauf and Dilbar Hussain unavailable, Salman Mirza took two wickets last time out too.

Mohammad Hasnain was Quetta’s top team bowler, meanwhile, and he is favourite to claim that title again, ahead of Usman Shinwari.

Shaheen Afridi’s price has dropped a lot since he claimed the top team bowler tag in the first match. He is now favourite, but Rashid Khan also bowled well last time out and Salman Mirza claimed two wickets so it is not as straight-forward as it may look.

The opposite is true for Quetta Gladiators’ top team bowler, looking at Mohammad Hasnain’s bowling form last time out. He could merit a shorter price as he flew a lone flag in reply to their poor batting performance last time out.

Lahore Qalandars vs Quetta Gladiators Prediction

Lahore Qalandars are favourites to beat Quetta Gladiators after a good start to the tournament on the opening weekend.

Final Verdict

Lahore Qalandars are favorites to win against Quetta Gladiators. Back Lahore Qalandars to beat Quetta Gladiators at 1.72

LHQ vs QTG Dream11 Prediction

  • Wicket Keeper

Ben Dunk is a key middle-order batsman for Lahore Qalandars and very good value having already scored 62 points. Sarfaraz Ahmed is 0.5 credits more expensive, but the Quetta captain opened the batting last time out and could also be worth picking.

  • Batsmen

Chris Gayle is ten credits but proved he is still in good batting form with his innings last time out. Fakhar Zaman is at the top of the order for Lahore, meanwhile, and a key batsman too. Zaman was partnered by Sohail Akhtar last time out, who could himself prove a good-value option at 8.5 credits.

  • All rounder

Mohammad Hafeez was key with the bat for Lahore last time out, while Mohammad Nawaz arrives with the Quetta Gladiators on the back of some good bowling form with Pakistan. Both are useful all-rounders and worth picking – though Ben Cutting and David Wiese are good alternatives if you choose to look elsewhere.

  • Bowlers

Shaheen Afridi and Rashid Khan are both 9.5 credits but both were central to Lahore’s win last time out. Afridi took the wickets and Rashid bowled economically before batting well. Both are must-picks, as is Mohammad Hasnain if his bowling last time out is anything to go by. Right down the other end of the pricing scale, Ahmed Daniyal was wicketless last time out but bowled at an excellent pace. All-rounder Agha Salman is an alternative at the eight-credit pricepoint though.

  • Captain /Vice Captain

Shaheen Afridi topped last season’s wicket-taking charts and started this season in excellent bowling form too. He could be worth picking as captain, while Rashid Khan reminded everyone he is still key with ball and bat and would be a great alternative or vice-captain.

LHQ vs QTG Dream11 Team Prediction

  • Batsmen:Chris Gayle, Fakhar Zaman, Sohail Akhtar

  • All Rounder:Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Nawaz

  • Wicket Keeper:Ben Dunk, Sarfaraz Ahmed

  • Bowler:Shaheen Afridi (c), Rashid Khan (vc), Mohammad Hasnain, Ahmed Daniyal
