Both teams have been successful winning the toss in recent matches, and both prefer to field first – it could be a crucial toss therefore, and Karachi would love to seize the initiative in front of a ‘home’ crowd.
Read on for team previews, betting tips, latest odds and match prediction for Karachi Kings vs Quetta Gladiators, PSL 2019.
Karachi Kings have kept things fairly consistent in recent matches, with only one change between their wins against Lahore Qalandars and Multan Sultans. Usman Shinwari returned in place of Mohammad Amir last time out and excelled with the ball, claiming 4-15. With Aaron Summers expensive and wicketless, the Australian could make way for Amir this time out – freeing an overseas spot for someone like Ben Dunk to slot back in, if necessary.
An unbeaten 53 from 42 balls in the win against Multan Sultans took Liam Livingstone – who also top-scored in the previous game – to three half-centuries in eight innings so far. He has 280 runs in total which, after the UAE fixtures were completed, put him third in PSL 2019 season batting charts.
Colin Ingram is next on the list for the Kings, with the majority of his 226 runs coming in the previous match against Quetta – his unbeaten century the only 100 scored by any batsman so far in this year’s PSL.
Babar Azam is the third Karachi Kings player with more than 200 runs, meanwhile, having hit two half-centuries and 224 runs in total.
With the ball, Usman Shinwari led the way against Multan Sultans last time out. He recaptured his best bowling form with 4-15 from his four overs. Mohammad Amir is still their leading wicket-taker, however, with nine from seven games.
Karachi Kings’ win when they last faced Quetta Gladiators has sparked an upturn in form, just in time to mount a charge for the play-offs. While they lost their next game – failing to defend 168/8 against Islamabad United – they have won both matches since.
Liam Livingstone top-scored in both, leading low chases after they restricted Lahore Qalandars to 133/5 on their way to a five-wicket win and then – thanks to Usman Shinwari’s 4-15, kept Multan Sultans to 118/7 last time out. Against the latter, Livingstone hit an unbeaten half-century as the Kings claimed another five-wicket win.

Quetta Gladiators have made just one change across their last three matches – Azam Khan replacing Ahsan Ali last time out, as the latter paid for a run of low scores at the top of the order. With Ahmed Shehzad slotting in at number two and batting so well, it may be an unchanged batting line-up. With a play-off place already secured, however, there will also be the temptation to rest players – Big Bash winner Harry Gurney is among those waiting if they do.
Shane Watson tops the PSL 2019 batting charts, having hit three half-centuries from nine innings on his way to 332 runs. His unbeaten 91 in the win against Peshawar Zalmi is his highest score.
Watson is one of three Quetta batsmen in top batting form, with Rilee Rossouw and Umar Akmal the other two. Rossouw has picked up where he left off in Bangladesh, scoring 235 runs so far, while Akmal is just seven behind having batted one innings less.
Their top-scorer last time out, however, was Ahmed Shehzad. Moving up to open with Watson, he hit 73 – his second consecutive half-century, having also hit exactly 50 against Peshawar Zalmi.
Sohail Tanvir has taken 14 wickets to lead the bowling, meanwhile, adding another two in the win against Islamabad. He also boasts an economy rate of 6.25 – the best of any bowler with six or more wickets so far in this year’s PSL. Fawad Ahmed’s 3-26 last time out moves him to nine wickets so far, meanwhile.
Quetta Gladiators’ season so far can be split into three sections – starting with four straight wins, before two consecutive losses, only to bounce back by winning their last three in a row.
They got back to winning ways against Multan Sultans – Sohail Tanvir took 3-19 and Dwayne Bravo matched those figures as they bowled the Sultans out for 121 on their way to a six-wicket win.
They then backed it up against Peshawar Zalmi as Shane Watson hit 91* and Ahmed Shehzad 50 as the Gladiators made light work of a chase of 166 – claiming an eight-wicket win with 14 balls to spare.
Most recently, Shehzad hit 73 in a total of 180/9 against Islamabad United, and the Gladiators restricted Islamabad to 137/9 in reply.

Karachi Kings’ win in Sharjah earlier in this year’s tournament was only their second in seven previous matches against Quetta Gladiators. They secured their first ever win against the Gladiators in last year’s tournament, when Colin Ingram’s 41 helped them to 149/9 and a 19-run win, but Shane Watson’s unbeaten 90 in a total of 180/4 proved far too much for them in the second fixture. The Kings were restricted to 113/8 on that occasion.
Ingram was back on form when they last met, however. Set 187 to win, he smashed 127 of them from just 59 balls – including 12 fours and eight sixes – as the Kings reached the target with eight balls to spare, winning by six wickets.
Quetta Gladiators are the form team in the Pakistan Super League but they know, win or lose, they will be playing in the qualifier next up. Karachi, meanwhile, have won two in a row and would love another in Karachi. It is why the bookmakers are split – Bet365 offering 1.90 on Quetta to win and the same on Karachi, and Betway offering 1.83 each.
The key could be at the top of the order, where Shane Watson and Ahmed Shehzad are in top form for Quetta – they are 1.85 to post the highest opening partnership with Betway and 1.90 with Bet365.
For Karachi, however, Colin Ingram was at his explosive best when these teams last met and is 4.50 to top score again, while Liam Livingstone has led their last two chases and is 4.00 with Bet365 to be Karachi Kings’ top run scorer.
Karachi are also spoiled for choice in the bowling department. Mohammad Amir is 3.75 to be their top bowler, while Usman Shinwari – in excellent form last time out – is 4.00.
Karachi Kings have already beaten Quetta Gladiators once this season, and another win would keep them on track against a team who, regardless of this result, will be in the qualifier.
