As the first round of the ICC World Twenty20 is underway, Ireland and Oman prepare for their clash in their bid to make it to the main rounds. The two associate teams from Group A will face each other on March 9 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala. Play is scheduled to commence at 7:30 PM local time. While Ireland have been around at the international level for quite some time now, Oman will be making their first ever appearance in the marquee event. Ireland are seen as one of the favorites to qualify for the main round, but Oman being a new entry to the tournament can be unpredictable. Oman managed to secure their place in this year's World Twenty20 qualifiers by virtue of their first ever victory over Namibia last year in July. The team is currently coached by Dulip Mendis, a former Sri Lankan player who has high expectations from his players.
Oman will go into their first World Cup game without much match practice as their warm-up tie against Afghanistan was washed out without a ball being bowled. However, beating Scotland by 14 runs in their first warm-up match would give them a lot of confidence. Zeeshan Maqsood and Ajay Lalcheta were the stars in their win on Friday. Maqsood scored a well compiled 58 from 42 deliveries while Lalcheta bowled an excellent spell of 3 for 26 in his four overs to restrict Scotland from reaching their target. Khawar Ali and Adnan Ilyas also made handy contributions with the bat.

Oman have just arrived at the big stage and facing a team like Ireland first up will be quite a big challenge. The Irish have already made their impact on world cricket by beating top-ranked teams like England in major ICC fixtures. With seasoned campaigners like Porterfield, Stirling and O'Brien in the side, defeating Ireland would be too much of an ask from the young boys from Oman. Unless Ireland don't crumble under pressure, they will remain the favorites to win the match.
