India U-19 Women are favorites to win
India U-19 Women Women will take on New Zealand U-19 Women at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom. The first semi-final of the Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup gets underway at 10:00 local time on Friday 27th January.
In spite of a seven wicket defeat to Australia U-19 Women earlier in the group, India U-19 Women finished top of Group 1 with three wins. They will be confident of progressing to the final after beating New Zealand five times in this format at the end of last year.
India U-19 Women’s batting was very impressive earlier in the tournament but they have found it a little tougher over recent games. They hit 219-3 against UAE with captain Shafali Verma hitting 78 and they will expect a player with her international experience to be comfortable in a high profile semi-final like this.
The bowler come into this game in high spirits after restricting Sri Lanka U-19 Women to 59-9 from their 20 overs in their last match. New Zealand U-19 Women will have a stronger batting line up but 16 year old leg-spinner will expect to be a threat again after taking 4-5 on Sunday.
India U-19 Women have won all their games in this tournament except for the set-back against Australia U-19 Women.
Izzy Sharp’s side won four games out of four in the Super 6 stage but were only prevented from finishing top of Group 2 by England U-19 Women’s superior net run rate. New Zealand U-19 Women won their final game by 103 runs against Pakistan U-19 Women.
The New Zealand U-19 Women top order was in fine form in the win over Pakistan U-19 Women. The team posted a score of 178-7 with the first three wickets contributing 117 runs inside 13 overs. Georgia Plimmer hit a half century, her first of the tournament.
Pakistan U-19 Women were restricted to 75-7 on Tuesday but the New Zealanders may well be disappointed with that effort after initially having the opposition at 19-5. Anna Browning bowled a maiden with Natasha Codyre taking 2-14 from three overs.
New Zealand U-19 are in great form with wins by 103 runs, 10 wickets (twice) and nine wickets over their last four games.
The match will be played at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom. There is turn and assistance for the quick bowlers on this pitch and we expect a par total of around 165.

Shweta Sehrawat, Shafali Verma (c), Gongadi Trisha, Sonia Mendhiya, Richa Ghosh (wk), Parshavi Chopra, Hrishita Basu, Mannat Kashyap, Titas Sadhu, Archana Devi, Sonam Yadav
Georgia Plimmer, Emma McLeod, Isabella Gaze (wk), Izzy Sharp (c), Kate Irwin, Anna Browning, Paige Loggenberg, Tash Wakelin, Abigail Hotton, Kayley Knight, Natasha Codyre
Both teams have had impressive tournaments and although New Zealand U-19 Women went through the Super 6 stage unbeaten, we think India U-19 Women will be too strong for them. Shafali Verma has the talent to win this game on her own with the bat and we expect a significant contribution from her. We are predicting a win for India U-19 Women.
