Toss Prediction
The venue has hosted four one-day internationals till date out of which three have been won by the side bowling first, and with rain threat looming large, the toss-winning captain will most probably opt to field first.
Weather Report
The weather for this first ODI does not look good as thunder showers have been forecast for Thursday all day long. There is a 70% chance of rain in the morning which means we could have a delayed start and possibly lose some overs as well.
Pitch Condition
Dharamsala has mostly witnessed even contests between bat and ball when it comes to the game's fifty-over format. Being located at a high altitude, the ball travels faster here which makes it easier for the batsmen to hit boundaries. However, wet conditions on Thursday will mean ample swing and seam for the pacers, particularly with the new ball.

India Team News & Playing 11
IND Team News
Opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan, all-rounder Hardik Pandya and pace bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar have all recovered from injuries and have been included in India's 15-man squad for this three-match ODI series. Rohit Sharma, however, continues to be unavailable as he is still recovering from the calf injury he had sustained on the tour of New Zealand. In his absence, it is most likely going to be Prithvi Shaw who will open the innings with Dhawan. The hosts have left out seamers Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Shami; the latter's exclusion could be due to his shoulder injury from the second test against the Kiwis.
IND Key Players
Virat Kohli: He is right at the top of the ICC ODI rankings for batsmen. The skipper had a rare poor series against New Zealand and will look to silence his critics in this series against South Africa. Kohli has a century and a fifty from his three ODI innings at this ground.
KL Rahul: He is going through the form of his life as far as white-ball cricket is concerned. He was one of the most consistent performers with the bat in New Zealand - he smashed two fifties in the T20Is, an unbeaten 88 in the first ODI and a quickfire ton in the third.
Yuzvendra Chahal: The leg-spinner is coming off an impressive ODI series against the Kiwis. He finished as the leading wicket-taker in the series with six wickets in two games at an economy of 5.25. Chahal will be the biggest threat for the Proteas in the middle overs.
IND Team Form
Following their disappointing semi-final defeat to New Zealand in last year’s World Cup, India secured three successive series wins – they beat the West Indies twice before beating Australia 2-1 at home in January. However, it was a flop show from the men in blue in their recent ODI series in New Zealand where they were drubbed 0-3 by the hosts. Though they did well with the bat, scoring 300+ twice in the three matches, their bowlers looked off-colour throughout the series and that is something they will be looking to improve upon against South Africa.
India Predicted Playing 11
Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Virat Kohli (c), Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Navdeep Saini

SA Team News
Quinton de Kock, who recently took over the reigns from Faf du Plessis, will continue to lead the South African team. This series will see the return of the former captain along with batsman Rassie van der Dussen. While du Plessis has not featured in an ODI since last year's World Cup, van der Dussen is returning after having been rested for the recent Australia series. Left-arm spinner George Linde has been included in the squad in place of Tabraiz Shamsi who withdrew himself from the tour due to personal reasons. Kagiso Rabada, who strained his groin in the T20I series against Australia, continues to remain sidelined. Meanwhile, the selectors have roped in Janneman Malan as the 16th member of the team owing to his impressive performance against the Aussies.
SA Key Players
Faf du Plessis: He is among the top five batsmen in the world in the game's 50-over format. The former South Africa skipper is averaging 47.47 and has 12 hundreds to his name. du Plessis will be playing his first ODI since the World Cup and will want to make his return memorable.
Heinrich Klaasen: He is the in-form batsman for South Africa in the middle order. Klaasen topped the runs chart in the recent home ODI series against Australia, making a 50+ score in every game - 123*, 51 and 68*. The team will want him to continue his rich vein of form.
Lungi Ngidi: He will be the biggest hope for the Proteas with the ball in the absence of senior pro Kagiso Rabada. Ngidi was the team's best bowler in the Australia series with nine wickets in two matches at an outstanding economy of 4.88. The pacer claimed a six-wicket haul in his last match.
SA Team Form
South Africa are coming off an excellent home series against Australia whom they beat quite convincingly in each of the three matches. They were the superior side in both batting and bowling departments and they will be high on confidence after that 3-0 series sweep. Just before that, the Proteas drew 1-1 against England in a three-game series at home. They now have six wins in their last seven completed one-day internationals.
South Africa Predicted Playing 11
Janneman Malan, Quinton de Kock (c/wk), JJ Smuts, Faf du Plessis, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo, George Linde, Keshav Maharaj, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi
India vs South Africa Head to Head
South Africa are ahead in terms of head-to-head count with 46 wins from 84 one-day internationals. India have won 35 while 3 have ended in no-results.
India have won seven of their last eight matches against South Africa in the fifty-over format of the game, including the most recently played three.
South Africa were handed a six-wicket loss when they last faced-off against India– at the 2019 World Cup in Southampton, England. The Proteas could manage only 227 after electing to bat first and it proved insufficient as the men in blue rode on Rohit Sharma’s ton to get home with 15 balls to spare.

🏆 India vs South Africa Prediction
India and South Africa have had contrasting fortunes in their recent ODI series. While the former were whitewashed in the three-game series against New Zealand, the latter swept aside mighty Australia in the three-game home series. The men in blue will look to put the disappointment of that defeat behind them and will fancy their chances against a Rabada-less South African unit, in conditions they are most comfortable playing in. The Indian batting line-up will miss Rohit Sharma at the top but they have a very talented young batsman in the form of Prithvi Shaw who showed glimpses of brilliance in New Zealand. The Proteas may be high on confidence but we feel they will come up short in the series opener.
