Gujarat Lions are favourites to win
Following their heavy defeat against RCB on Saturday, Gujarat Lions have slipped down to fourth place in the league standings. They will now face the second positioned Kolkata Knight Riders on May 19 at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. This will be the 51st match of the Indian Premier League 2016 and play is scheduled to begin at 8 PM local time. Both teams have 14 points from 12 games and the winner of this match will move closer to qualifying for the playoffs.
Venue and Toss
The Green Park will be hosting its first ever T20 match on Thursday. The ground, however, has witnessed many international Tests and ODIs in the past. The pitch here is not known to assist the bowlers, especially faster bowlers, and neither does it encourage sharp bounce. So the ball is expected to come nicely onto the bat and there should be plenty of runs in both the innings.
The possibility of dew later on in the match will make winning the toss more important. Moreover, both KKR and GL have won only twice in this IPL while batting first. In such a scenario, the team that wins the toss will probably put the opposition into batting first.

If Gujarat Lions Bat First
Predicted score: 180+
The opening partnership between Smith and McCullum will be crucial for the Gujarat Lions. McCullum in particular has been one of the most consistent batsmen for the team and if he gets going, that score of 180 won't be too far away. Raina is all set to return and with Finch batting in the middle-order, GL have a strong chance of posting 180 or even more on such a flat wicket.
Russell and Morkel will be leading the pace attack for the Kolkata Knight Riders. The former ranks among the top wicket-takers of the season and if he removes Smith early, who is quite vulnerable at the start, KKR could apply pressure on Raina who will be short on match-practice. Narine and Shakib will look to tighten the screws with spin in the middle overs and if the Lions lose a couple more wickets during this period, it will get tough for Bravo and the others to stretch the score to around 180.

If Kolkata Knight Riders Bat First
Predicted score: 170+
Skipper Gautam Gambhir has scored the most runs for his side and KKR will need him to bat long against the Lions. His opening partner Uthappa and Pandey at no. 3 are also batting well and if the top three bat through the first ten overs, the explosive Yusuf Pathan and Andre Russell in the middle-order could flex their muscles towards the end and power the Knight Riders to 170 and beyond.
Praveen Kumar and Dhawal Kulkarni are likely to open the bowling for Gujarat Lions. The former took two wickets against KKR in the reverse fixture at the Eden Gardens and the Lions will expect the swing bowler to deliver a similar performance on Thursday. If KKR's top three are dismissed cheaply, it will give Bravo and Jadeja a great opportunity to exert more pressure on their middle order. Bravo's ability to deceive the batsmen with pace variations will make him difficult to score off at the death. So KKR will have to keep wickets in hand, otherwise they would have to settle with a moderate total.
Our Prediction
Gujarat Lions have lost four of their last five games. They were thrashed by RCB in their previous match where their entire batting lineup collapsed at 104. Kolkata Knight Riders, on the other hand, have been performing better of late with three wins in their last five games. But while GL need to address their batting issues, KKR will have to work on their bowling following their Monday's nine-wicket loss to RCB despite posting 183 runs.
Kolkata Knight Riders are an excellent mix of youth and experience and are definitely one of the stronger contenders for the title. But since Gujarat Lions with a slightly better batting lineup will be playing on a flattish pitch, we feel that they stand a better chance of winning the match on Thursday.
