Who will win Guyana Amazon Warriors vs Barbados Tridents QF1, CPL 2019?

Unbeaten, table-topping Guyana Amazon Warriors take on second-placed Barbados Tridents in the first qualifier of the 2019 Caribbean Premier League play-offs. The match takes place at Providence Stadium on October 6 and the live action starts at 15:30 local time.

The Warriors won ten from ten in the group stage, topping the table after a string of impressive performances. With the Providence wicket spinning in the most recent fixtures there, Imran Tahir took 3-12 in a 77-run defeat of Jamaica Tallawahs and Chandrapaul Hemraj claimed 3-15 as they beat Trinbago Knight Riders by seven wickets to finish strongly.

Barbados Tridents also finished the group stage strongly, however – Johnson Charles’ half-century led them to a seven-wicket win against Trinbago Knight Riders, which proved enough to earn them second place on net run rate. The Tridents won three of their final four games, but they are still outsiders for this one.

GAW vs BT Toss Prediction

Guyana Amazon Warriors won the toss in each of their final two group matches, most recently fielding first. Barbados Tridents could choose that same tactic.

GAW vs BT Weather Report

There could be some thunderstorms earlier in the day in Guyana, but they are forecast to clear by the time this games takes place. The chance of rain drops considerably through the afternoon and temperatures will stay high.

GAW vs BT Pitch Condition

Though normally a balanced wicket, there is no question that recent matches at Providence Stadium, as Guyana finished the group stage with two home matches, saw the spinners thrive. Expect more turn in the play-off matches too.

Guyana Amazon Warriors Team News & Playing 11

GAW Team News

Qais Ahmad and Romario Shepherd did not play the final group game, with Odean Smith and Ben Laughlin recalled instead. Shepherd had not bowled in the final group game either. Ahmad could be recalled on a turning wicket, however.

GAW Key Players

Brandon King: Back in good form as he set the tone at the top of the order last time out, hitting 33 from 23 balls. It was a jump back to the excellent form he showed earlier in the tournament, when he hit three consecutive half-centuries.

Shoaib Malik: Finished the group stage strongly with two contrasting innings. He hit 73* in the win against Jamaica, as the Warriors recovered from 8/4, and then 28* last time out to hold an end as Nicholas Pooran batted them to victory at the other. He also took another wicket.

Imran Tahir: Wicketless last time out for the first time since his arrival at his tournament. He had taken 13 wickets in his previous six appearances, and will expect to add to that tally if the Providence Stadium wicket turns once again.

GAW Team Form

Guyana Amazon Warriors won all ten of their league phase fixtures, to become the first team in the Caribbean Premier League history to finish the group stage with a perfect record.

Their final two fixtures were at home, and they produced two commanding wins to continue their awesome momentum. Shoaib Malik’s 73* helped them recover from 8/4 to post 156/6 against Jamaica Tallawahs, before Imran Tahir took 3-12 as they skittled the visitors for 79.

Then, Chandrapaul Hemraj led the bowling, taking 3-15 as they restricted Trinbago Knight Riders to 143/5, before Nicholas Pooran’s unbeaten 54 helped them to a seven-wicket win.

Wicket-keeper

Johnson Charles finished the group stage in excellent form for Barbados Tridents and is well worth picking up at nine credits. Nicholas Pooran’s form was hit-and-miss but he did hit 61* in this fixture in the league phase, and finished with an unbeaten half-century too. Both could be worth selecting.

Batsmen

Brandon King got back to his best last time out, having previously scored one of his three consecutive half-centuries in the win against Barbados at Bridgetown. Chandrapaul Hemraj, who has also been bowling well at Providence, hit a half-century whey the Warriors beat the Tridents at Bridgetown, meanwhile. Both teams have some excellent all-rounders so you only really need one more batsman. Shimron Hetmyer is the most expensive, at ten credits, but he has been out-performing Alex Hales. Alternatively, Jonathan Carter only costs 8.5 credits – which keeps plenty of credits in reserve for the bowlers and all-rounders – but he may also be the man to make way for Shai Hope, should he return.

All-rounders

Of those all-rounders then, it is no coincidence that Barbados’ form improved when Shakib Al Hasan arrived. He is 9.5 credits and well worth selecting. JP Duminy has amassed more than 500 points so far and costs ten credits, while Shoaib Malik has led from the front for Guyana and is 9.5 credits. Malik finished the group stage in good form too. If you have only selected one wicket-keeper, you may also have space for Jason Holder too – another to have really racked up the points this season.

Bowlers

Imran Tahir went wicketless last time out, but his reputation speaks for itself. He has 13 wickets in seven appearances this season and will be a key figure if the pitch turns at Providence again. For the Tridents, Harry Gurney has been in excellent wicket-taking form since he came into the team. He has impressed across the globe this year and is great value at nine credits. That potentially leaves just one space and two in-form bowlers competing for it. Chris Green is your option for the Warriors, and he has shone against the Tridents before, while Hayden Walsh Jr was in supreme wicket-taking form at the end of the group stage for Barbados.

Captain/Vice-captain

If the pitch turns, all of the spinners come into the frame and given two of the in-form spinners are also in form with the bat, Shakib Al Hasan and Shoaib Malik are well worth considering for captain and vice-captain. Chandrapaul Hemraj will open the batting and took three wickets opening the bowling last time too, so he is also worth looking at.

Barbados Tridents Team News & Playing 11

BT Team News

The additions of Harry Gurney and Shakib Al Hasan helped Barbados Tridents finish the group stage of CPL 2019 strongly, and they were expecting to have Shai Hope fit for the play-offs too after he missed every game so far. Whoever he replaces will feel hard done by, but Jonathan Carter and Justin Greaves look the more likely to make way.

BT Key Players

Shakib Al Hasan: The Bangladeshi all-rounder was a late addition to the squad but he has wasted no time making an impact. Last time out, he took 2-25 to move to four wickets in three games. He has also scored 73 runs in that time.

Johnson Charles: Barbados Tridents have not missed Shai Hope because their wicket-keeper-batsman has been in excellent form himself. Charles finished the group stage with scores of 58, 13, 47 and 55 in his last four innings.

Harry Gurney: The English bowler has helped lead another team to the play-offs in a T20 competition. His 2-14 earned him the man of the match award last time out and means he has taken nine wickets in five games so far.

BT Team Form

Barbados Tridents won three of their last four games to climb up the table and into the play-offs. It is no coincidence that their upturn in form followed the arrival of the likes of Harry Gurney and Shakib Al Hasan. The former took 3-17 as they bowled St Lucia Zouks out for 117 in reply to 141/6 – though Hayden Walsh did outshine him with 4-26.

Then, Gurney and Shakib took two wickets apiece last time out as they restricted Trinbago Knight Riders to 134/8 before Johnson Charles’ half-century earned a seven-wicket win.
