England vs West Indies, 2nd Test
England must beat West Indies to keep their three-test series alive when they meet in the second test. The match, which is also part of the ICC World Test Championship, takes place at Old Trafford between July 16 and July 20 and the live action starts at 11:00 local time each day.
England fell short with the bat after electing to bat first in the opening test, with Jason Holder and Shannon Gabriel doing most of the damage with the ball. Captain Joe Root returns for this match, however, and Stuart Broad may also come back into the team after being overlooked last time out.
West Indies put in a good all-round display to earn victory last time out, with Jermaine Blackwood’s mature innings on the final day carrying them to a four-wicket win. It earned them 40 points in the World Test Championship and one more win will ensure they keep the Wisden Trophy.

England chose to bat first last time out, but overcast conditions will surely lead them to bowl first if Joe Root wins the toss.

An overcast start to proceedings before things brighten up across the test, it is only the Saturday that could see a bit of rain-related disruption.

England Team News & Playing 11
ENG Team News
Joe Root will return to the team as captain after taking parental leave, with Joe Denly missing out. Stuart Broad’s omission last time out did not pay off either, and the hugely experienced bowler is likely to return this time – Mark Wood and James Anderson have been rested. Just hours before the test, it was announced Jofra Archer was also to miss out - excluded after breaking the bio-secure protocols in place. It means Sam Curran or Ollie Robinson will take the final bowling place.
ENG Key Players
- Ben Stokes: Captained the team last time out and while his decision to bat first did not pay off, he did score 89 runs and take six wickets across the test.
- Stuart Broad: Second only to Anderson in England’s wicket-taking charts, he was missed last time out and has a point to prove now.
- Joe Root: Sorely missed last time out, the England captain’s return will bolster the batting line-up. He scored a pair of half-centuries in his last test match.
ENG Team Form
England beat South Africa in their most recent test series prior to this one, but in strange conditions they suffered a four-wicket defeat at the start of this series. They should take confidence from the way they bounced back from their opening-test defeat in South Africa, however.
England Predicted Playing 11
Rory Burns, Dom Sibley, Joe Root (c), Zak Crawley, Ben Stokes, Ollie Pope, Jos Buttler (wk), Chris Woakes, Sam Curran, Dom Bess, Stuart Broad
West Indies Team News & Playing 11
WI Team News
West Indies have options to rotate the squad if they choose to, but if their pace quartet is fit and firing, it would seem there is no reason to change a winning formula.
WI Key Players
- Jason Holder: Scored a double-century when these teams last met and the giant bowler started this series by taking 6-42 from 20 overs in the first innings of the first test.
- Shannon Gabriel: Took nine wickets in the first test, following up figures of 4-62 in the first innings with 5-75 in the second.
- Roston Chase: A steady batsman and a useful extra bowling option – with an eight-wicket haul against England to his name – who can cause damage with bat and ball.
WI Team Form
West Indies have now won back-to-back tests, beating Afghanistan in a one-off test thanks to Rahkeem Cornwall’s wickets and Shamarh Brooks’ century before their first test success in Southampton. Jermaine Blackwood’s 95 in the final innings helped them to a four-wicket win and their first ICC World Test Championship points.
West Indies Predicted Playing 11
Kraigg Brathwaite, John Campbell, Shai Hope, Sharmarh Brooks, Roston Chase, Jermaine Blackwood, Jason Holder, Shane Dowrich (wk), Alzarri Joseph, Kemar Roach, Shannon Gabriel
England vs West Indies Head to Head
England are still looking for their 50th test win against West Indies, as the current holders of the Wisden Trophy – following a 2-1 win on home soil at the start of 2019 – won the opening test of this series too. England’s batting was much better than that first test in the Caribbean last year, but Jason Holder’s good form against England continued with his six-wicket haul in Southampton.
