England Team News & Playing 11
Team News
Assistant coach Paul Farbrace will take charge of England for the Twenty20 against Australia, with the squad largely the same as that used for the ODI series. Chris Jordan is the only player added to the squad, while Sam Billings, Craig Overton, Ben Stokes and Mark Wood are the players to miss out from the ODI squad.
Dawid Malan, Liam Dawson and Billings all played in England's final T20 in Australia in February, but Jonny Bairstow, and Moeen Ali are all in line to return in their place.
Key Players
Jos Buttler was England's hero in the final one day international against Australia, continuing the stunning form he showed during this year's IPL. In addition to his 110 not out in the final match, he also scored 54* at Chester-le-Street and 91* in Cardiff. At the IPL, he enjoyed a stunning run of form, hitting five consecutive half-centuries - including two unbeaten 90+ scores - to fire Rajasthan Royals into the play-offs and earn a test recall.
Alex Hales, Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow have also been in blistering form in the recent ODI series. Roy and Bairstow both scored 300 runs across the five games - the former hitting two centuries and the latter one, while Hales hit the highest score of the series when he blasted 147 to anchor England's record-breaking innings at Trent Bridge.
With the ball, Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali both claimed 12 wickets apiece and will hope to prove themselves on their return to the T20 team too. Rashid was the best of a bad bunch for England in the Trans-Tasman Tri Series, claiming four wickets in four matches. David Willey also claimed four but was much more expensive.
Team Form
England's Twenty20 international form is poor - suffering three defeats in a row at the Trans-Tasman Tri Series before recovering to beat New Zealand in their final game. The return of Eoin Morgan proved key, as he hit 80 not out in the last game. Prior to that, they lost their last T20 international on home soil too - a 21-run defeat to West Indies in Durham, despite Liam Plunkett and Adil Rashid claiming three wickets apiece during West Indies' innings of 176/9.
In Australia, sluggish batting and expensive bowling was their problem - failing to defend 155/9 due to Maxwell's century in their first game, before struggling to 137/7 in a three-wicket defeat (with 33 balls to spare) in the second game against the Aussies. Against New Zealand, they fell 12 runs short of 196/5 in their first match, before Morgan marked his return from injury to lead England to victory in their fourth and final game. Having failed to qualify for the final, this was their most recent T20 international match - and their 100th ever.
England Predicted Playing 11
Jason Roy, Alex Hales, Jonny Bairstow, Eoin Morgan, Jos Buttler, Moeen Ali, David Willey, Liam Plunkett, Chris Jordan, Adil Rashid, Tom Curran
Australia Team News & Playing 11
Team News
Aaron Finch has been named as Australia's T20 international captain as a result of David Warner's ongoing suspension for ball tampering. Alex Carey will serve as vice-captain and take over the gloves with Tim Paine not involved in the T20 squad.
Uncapped duo Mitchell Swepson and Jack Wildermuth have earned call-ups, but Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins - who both missed the IPL through injury - remain unavailable. Chris Lynn is not selected and neither is Adam Zampa.
Nic Maddinson will join up with the squad after not playing in the ODI series
Key Players
Glenn Maxwell was England's destroyer in their last T20 meetings, blasting a century at Hobart to lead Australia to victory before top scoring again in Melbourne. He finished the Trans-Tasman Twenty20 Tri-Series as Australia's top scorer with 233 runs.
With the ball, Andrew Tye took ten wickets in that series and was also the leading wicket taker in this year's IPL - claiming the Purple Cap thanks to 24 wickets in 14 matches, including three four-fers. In the recent one-dayers in England it was Billy Stanlake and Kane Richardson leading the way with six wickets apiece from four and three games respectively.
Aaron Finch is their danger man with the bat, but Australia's new T20 captain has struggled for consistency. If he starts scoring, however, he will score plenty - his 100 in the ODI at Chester-le-Street was a good response after a hit-and-miss IPL campaign.
Team Form
Australia won all five T20 internationals in the Trans-Tasman T20 Tri-Series in February, beating England and New Zealand twice apiece in the group stage before victory against the latter in the final.
Australia restricted New Zealand to just 117/9 in their first match - Andrew Tye taking 4/23 from four overs - before winning by seven wickets after a rain-affected reply. They followed it up with back-to-back wins against England - Glenn Maxwell leading the pursuit of 156 to win in the first match with his 58-ball 103*, before they restricted England to 137/7 in the second match and chased it with 33 balls remaining. A high-scoring game against New Zealand followed - Australia achieving the highest ever run chase, after New Zealand posted 243/6. Australia reached their target with seven balls to spare.
The rain-affected final saw less runs, but Australia were 121/3 in response to 150/9 when the rain came - enough to secure a 19 run D/L method victory.
Australia Predicted Playing 11
D'Arcy Short, Glenn Maxwell, Nic Maddinson, Aaron Finch, Travis Head, Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey, Ashton Agar, Andrew Tye, Kane Richardson, Billy Stanlake
