England have enjoyed success on home soil batting first and, after a difficult chase in Ireland in their last ODI, the hosts may want to bat first if they win the toss in this match.

England’s World Cup preparations have already been fraught, with Alex Hales’ withdrawal from the squad taking the headlines. James Vince has replaced him in the squad but it could be Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy opening at The Oval. Jofra Archer is likely to continue to lead the pace attack, while Chris Jordan is hoping to be included as he also looks to squeeze into the World Cup squad at the last minute.
Eoin Morgan led by example in the T20 international against Pakistan, bouncing back from his duck against his home nation, Ireland. Morgan has 43 ODI 50s to his name and 12 centuries, and became the first batsman to score 6,000 runs in ODIs for England.
Joe Root hit 47 from 42 balls in the T20, meanwhile, and the Yorkshireman still averages above 50 in ODIs, sharing plenty of big partnerships with Eoin Morgan over the past year.
At the top of the order, Jonny Bairstow arrives on the back of his stunning form in the Big Bash League and was key to England’s home ODI success last year. He and Jason Roy have both been in explosive form at the top of the order.
In the bowling attack, Jofra Archer continues to push his claim for a World Cup place – the paceman was in good form in the IPL and took 2-29 in the T20i in Cardiff, after his debut wicket in the Dublin ODI.
Liam Plunkett was England’s star bowler at Malahide, meanwhile. He took 4-35 in the one-off ODI, having taken six wickets in his last two List A matches at The Oval for Surrey too.
England go into this series as the number one ODI team in world cricket after a brilliant few years. They have won nine of their last ten bilateral ODI series of more than one game.
They drew 2-2 with West Indies in their most recent full series, but bounced back to start the summer in winning fashion in a one-off match against Ireland in Malahide. Liam Plunkett took 4-35 in that game as England restricted Ireland to 198 all out, before Ben Foakes (61*) and Tom Curran (47*) led them to a four-wicket win.

Shadab Khan has been ruled out of Pakistan’s tour with a virus – Yasir Shah has replaced him. Shoaib Malik will miss the first two ODIs due to personal reasons, while Mohammad Hafeez will also miss those two matches with a hand injury.
Fakhar Zaman hit 76 and 101 in Pakistan’s two 50-over warm-up matches. The 29-year-old has hit nine half-centuries and three 100s in his 31 ODIs and averages 53.40 in the format.
Babar Azam hit 65 in the T20i in Cardiff, meanwhile, having hit 101 in the T20 warm up and an unbeaten 68 against Northamptonshire too. Like Zaman, he averages over 50 in ODIs and has eight centuries and ten 50s in his 57 ODI innings.
Haris Sohail hit two centuries in Pakistan’s most recent ODI series, meanwhile, though he could not prevent defeat to Australia.
Imad Wasim has been in good all-round form so far on this tour, meanwhile. He hit a List A century in the warm-up match against Kent and took 2-19 and 1-24 in his last two T20 matches.
Mohammad Amir has much to prove with the ball, meanwhile. Junaid Khan and Shaheen Afridi are ahead of him in the World Cup squad and all three will be the focus of a lot of interest in this series. Hasan Ali arrives on the back of his fine Pakistan Super League form, meanwhile.
While top of the world in T20 cricket, Pakistan’s ODI form has hit the buffers. They won the Champions Trophy and series against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe afterwards – either side of being whitewashed by New Zealand.
They have not won since, however, most recently losing 5-0 to Australia in the UAE. Haris Sohail and Mohammad Rizwan both hit two centuries in that series but could not prevent Pakistan losing all five matches.

England have won 49 of their 82 against ODIs against Pakistan, losing 31. There have also been two no results. Their most recent meeting was at the Champions Trophy in England in 2017. Hasan Ali took 3-35 as Pakistan bowled England out for 211, before Azhar Ali (76) and Fakhar Zaman (57) helped Pakistan to an eight-wicket win.
The most recent series between the two was also in England, with the hosts winning 4-1 on that occasion.
