England’s decision to bowl first at Trent Bridge backfired, but there could still be something for the bowlers early on at Cardiff and, if he wins the toss, Eoin Morgan might look to field again.

Mark Wood came in for Liam Plunkett at Trent Bridge, with England opting for extra pace as opposed to Plunkett’s swing. Though Wood picked up wickets, Plunkett’s variation and better batting may see that change reversed. Tom Curran, James Vince and Liam Dawson are yet to feature. If anybody else’s place is in danger, it is Moeen Ali’s – he has struggled with the bat but his three wickets last time out are likely to be enough to keep his place.
England hit the first two centuries of this year’s tournament in the loss to Pakistan as both Joe Root and Jos Buttler proved their worth with the bat. If either one had still been there at the end, England would likely have won.
Root’s century followed his 50 in the opening game, and was his 15th in ODI cricket, while Buttler’s was the ninth of his career and England’s quickest ever at a World Cup.
Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Eoin Morgan and Ben Stokes form the rest of the top six which, when all of them fire, is arguably one of the best batting line-ups in world cricket. Roy, Morgan and Stokes all hit half-centuries in the opening win against South Africa.
Stokes took two wickets with the ball in that game too, while Jofra Archer impressed on his way to three. While both were wicketless last time out, however, it was Chris Woakes (3-73, four catches and 21 from 14 balls) who impressed last time. Moeen Ali offered good control to claim 3-50, meanwhile.
England started the World Cup with a statement of intent against South Africa – posting 311/8 as Jason Roy, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan and Ben Stokes all scored half-centuries. Jofra Archer led the way as they then bowled the Proteas out for 207.
The form book was upset last time out, however, when England finished on 334/9 in pursuit of 349 to beat Pakistan, despite Root and Jos Buttler both scoring centuries.

Bangladesh have been unchanged for their first two matches, with Liton Das missing out at the top of the order and Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar opening. The Tigers could stick with the same line-up for a third game in a row, despite the narrow defeat to New Zealand last time out.
Shakib Al Hasan has started this tournament in excellent form, highlighting why he is the world’s foremost all-rounder. He followed up his 75 against South Africa with 64 against New Zealand and then took 2-47 with the ball, to add to the 1-50 he claimed against the Proteas.
Shakib was the only Bangladesh batsman to pass 50 last time out, but Soumya Sarkar and Mushfiqur Rahim both arrived at the World Cup in good form, and Tamim Iqbal’s big-hitting prowess is well known too.
Mustafizur Rahman went wicketless last time out, having taken three against South Africa, but Mehidy Hasan Miraz (2-47) and Mossadek Hossain (2-33) both impressed with the ball, alongside Shakib.
Bangladesh won their opening game at the World Cup, as Mushfiqur Rahim hit 78 and Shakib Al Hasan 75 on their way to 330/6 against South Africa. In reply, the Proteas could only reach 309/8.
The Tigers were unable to back it up, however, as another Shakib Al Hasan half-century could not prevent them folding for 244 against New Zealand. The Black Caps looked to be cruising in reply, but in the end limped over the line to record a two-wicket win after a good Bangladesh bowling comeback.

Though Bangladesh have beaten England at each of the last two Cricket World Cups, their overall record in this fixture does not reflect that. England have won 16 of their 18 other matches, giving the Tigers a 20 per cent win record in total. Their most recent meeting was at the Champions Trophy in England in 2017. Tamim’s century helped Bangladesh to 305/6 but Joe Root (133*), Alex Hales (95) and Eoin Morgan (75*) led England to an eight-wicket win with 2.4 overs to spare.
