England Team News & Playing 11

ENG Team News

England’s completed squad for World Cup 2019 showed three changes from their provisional selection, with Jofra Archer, Liam Dawson and James Vince in for David Willey, Joe Denly and Alex Hales. Dawson is likely to play a prominent role in this warm-up match given he did not feature in the series with Pakistan. Jofra Archer and Mark Wood will want overs under their belts too.

ENG Key Players

Jason Roy was England’s top run scorer in the series with Pakistan, hitting two half-centuries and one hundred in his three innings as he continued his fine opening partnership with Jonny Bairstow.

Bairstow also hit a century in that series, as did Jos Buttler – the latter smashing 110 not out from 55 balls the last time England played at the Rose Bowl.

Whoever lines up in the top order has big runs in them, however – Joe Root is England’s top-ranked ODI batsman, while captain Eoin Morgan hit two-half centuries against Pakistan too.

With the ball, Chris Woakes picked up ten wickets in four innings against Pakistan and Adil Rashid is not far behind the all-rounder in the world rankings.

Jofra Archer has generated plenty of excitement, meanwhile – the Bajan-born paceman bowled some hostile spells to earn a World Cup call-up.

ENG Team Form

England head to the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup as the top-ranked team in men’s ODI cricket and re-iterated why they are viewed as favourites with a dominant series win against Pakistan.

They started this summer with a low-scoring win against Ireland at Malahide – Ben Foakes (61*) and Tom Curran (47*) leading them to a four-wicket victory after England had slipped to 101/6 in pursuit of 199.

Against Pakistan, after rain curtailed the first game, Jos Buttler’s 55-ball 110* helped them to 373/3 at the Rose Bowl in the second game and England held on to win by 12 runs. Jonny Bairstow’s century helped them chase 359 to win the second by six wickets.

The following match was a nervier affair, but Jason Roy’s century set the tone and Ben Stokes hit 71* to lead them to 341/7 and a three-wicket win with three balls to spare.

England posted 351/9 batting first in the final game at Headingley – pegged back after a lightning-fast start – before Chris Woakes took 5-54 as Pakistan were bowled out for 297.

Australia Team News & Playing 11

AUS Team News

The return of David Warner and Steve Smith after their one-year ban for their part in the ball-tampering scandal took the headlines in Australia’s World Cup selection. Since naming their 15-man squad, which was otherwise largely as expected, Kane Richardson has replaced the injured Jhye Richardson. Usman Khawaja has been cleared of any injury after taking a blow on the jaw in their unofficial warm-up match against the West Indies.

AUS Key Players

Captain Aaron Finch was Australia’s star man in the series whitewash of Pakistan, leading from the front with scores of 116, 153*, 90, 39 and 53.

Big-hitting Finch already boasted a superb opening partnership with David Warner in ODI cricket – which could be resumed with the returning former vice-captain having been the IPL’s star batsman.

And Finch has now struck up a great partnership with Usman Khawaja too – who hit his first two ODI centuries in the series win against India and continued his form against Pakistan as well.

Steve Smith has returned with a point to prove too, meanwhile. His last three warm-up innings have seen him hit 89*, 91* and 76.

Glenn Maxwell hit two half-centuries in the warm-ups against New Zealand, meanwhile, and provides an option with the ball too.

Of the front-line bowlers, Pat Cummins’ form against the New Zealand XI picked up where he left off against India and Pakistan. In the former series, he took 14 wickets and was instrumental in Australia’s comeback. He took three wickets in his only game against Pakistan and then seven against New Zealand too.

AUS Team Form

Australia were in dreadful form in the ODI game until they came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in India and then whitewashed Pakistan with a dominant 5-0 win in the UAE.

Their initial World Cup warm-up matches saw them take on a New Zealand XI in a three-game series. Pat Cummins, Jason Behrendorff and Nathan Coulter-Nile each took three wickets in alow-scoring first game – the Australia XI chasing 216 to win by one wicket with ten balls to spare.

Usman Khawaja (56), Steve Smith (89*) and Glenn Maxwell (52) helped Australia to 277/6 in the second game, but they lost by seven wickets, before sealing victory in the final match of the series.

Pat Cummins took 4-32 as New Zealand posted 286/9, before Steve Smith’s unbeaten 91 and Glenn Maxwell’s 70 helped the Aussies to victory. Rain shortened their innings by six overs, but the were comfortable ahead of the DLS par score by then on 248/5.

They continued their World Cup warm-ups with an unofficial warm-up game at the Rose Bowl last time out and, after bowling West Indies out for 229, Smith and Shaun Marsh hit half-centuries in a seven-wicket win.

Australia Predicted Playing 11

David Warner, Aaron Finch, Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Pat Cummins, Jason Behrendorff, Mitchell Starc, Kane Richardson, Adam Zampa, Nathan Lyon

England vs Australia Head to Head

Australia have the better overall record against England in one-day internationals – 81 wins to England’s 61 – but it is England who have dominated more recently.

In their last tour of Australia, England bounced back from a dreadful Ashes series with a 4-1 win. They set the tone by chasing 305 to win the opening game and only suffered one small blip after that.

When Australia headed to England last year, meanwhile, the hosts were untouchable. They bowled Australia out for 214 to win the first game by three wickets and then scored 342/8 in a 38-run win next up. England made history in the third match – smashing 481/6 at Trent Bridge before carting Australia for 239 – and there was no let-up afterwards. A six-wicket win chasing 311 followed, before Jos Buttler’s carefully-crafted century led them to a low-scoring one-wicket win to wrap up a series whitewash.
