Bijapur Bulls are favorites to win
Defending champions Bijapur Bulls face last year’s finalists Bengaluru Blasters, who finished top of the group before losing in that final, in their opening game of the 2019 Karnataka Premier League. The match will take place at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore, on August 18 and the live action starts at 19:00 local time.
It is the Bulls’ first game of the 2019 competition, having retained key figures from last year’s success in Bharat Chipli and KC Cariappa.
The Blasters first match of the tournament was curtailed by the rain after 13 overs of their innings – they were 88/3, with neither of their Karnataka openers able to build on steady starts.

With the trend to field first in this competition, Bengaluru Blasters lost the toss last time out so they will be keen to get their bowlers in the action early on this time out.
More rain and thunderstorms are forecast in Bangalore on Sunday, particularly in the evening where humidity is forecast to be 97 per cent and the chance of rain is as high as 88 per cent. They will be lucky to get a game out of this one.
Unlike a lot of pitches in the area, the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium offers a little more pace and bounce, making it ideal for batting on – particularly when coupled with the size of the boundaries.

Bengaluru boast the Karnataka opening pair BR Sharath and Rohan Kadam this season, but it was Nikin Jose who was best set before the rain came last time out. It is unlikely the Blasters will make any changes off the back of that game.
Rohan Kadam: A key figure in Karnataka’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy success, with the left-hander scoring freely – including a half-century in the final. He will now look to carry that form into the KPL.
V Koushik: Where Kadam was key with the bat, V Koushik’s medium-pace bowling was also instrumental for Karnataka in their success earlier this year.
Nikin Jose: The teenager is highly-rated with the bat and showed why in the opening game when he made a fluent 28 not out before the rain came down. He could be a breakthrough player in this year’s tournament.
Beaten in last year’s final, the Blasters made a steady start to their first innings of the 2019 tournament and were just starting to motor through Nikin Jose when the rain came down at 88/3 from 13 overs and prevented any further play.

Bharath Chipli says he is happy with the recruitment at the 2019 KPL auction, pointing to Suneel Raju, NP Bhareth, Rajoo Bhatkal and MG Naveen as key acquisitions for the new season. All four will join Chipli and KC Cariappa in a well-balanced line-up.
Bharath Chipli: Led the way in last season’s tournament with 254 runs in six innings as he led the Bulls to victory. The captain, one of the key retained players, scored his runs at a strike rate of 145.97 too.
KC Cariappa: Dubbed by Chadli as one of the best bowlers in KPL history, the Karnataka and Kolkata Knight Riders’ leggie was the Bulls other key retained player. He took eight wickets in six matches last season but crucially did so with an economy rate of 4.62 runs per over.
Raju Bhatkal: Scored some useful runs for Mysuru Warriors last season, particularly early in the tournament, and will join Chipli as a key batsman for the Bulls this time out.
Bijapur Bulls were unfortunate with the weather last season, winning three of their four completed games but seeing two games fall foul of the weather. That was enough to finish in the play-offs, however and there they beat Hubli Tigers and Bengaluru Blasters to win the tournament.
Bharat Chipli (c), Suneel Raju, Raju Bhatkal, Swapnil Yelave, MG Naveen, NP Bhareth, Mohith Ba (wk), KC Cariappa, Prateek Jain, Pranav Bhatia, Suraj Kamath
Bijapur Bulls have won the two completed games between these two teams, including last year’s final. After their group game had been rained off, their first meeting was the showpiece, when the Bulls’ bowlers came out well on top. KP Appanna (3-16) led the way as they bowled the Bulls out for 101, before MG Naveen hit 43 in the chase to ensure they cruised to their target with 6.1 overs and seven wickets to spare.
Bijapur Blasters have retained some key players from last year’s success and they can start – if the weather allows – their title defence with a win.
Final Verdict: Back Bijapur Bulls to beat Bengaluru Blasters
