Bangladesh Team News & Playing 11

BAN Team News

Bangladesh’s side to face South Africa in their opening game was as expected, with Liton Das missing out at the top of the order. The only change that the team could make for this game is to bring in the experienced Rubel Hossain in place of Mohammad Saifuddin. Otherwise, they may just go in with an unchanged line-up.

BAN Key Players

Shakib Al Hasan highlighted his importance to Bangladesh in the win against South Africa – the world’s number-one all-rounder hit 75 with the bat, took a tidy 1-50 with the ball and claimed a catch too.

Wicket-keeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim top-scored, however – hitting 78 from 80 balls and sharing a 142-run partnership with Shakib. The 31-year-old also scored 90 against in Bangladesh’s warm-up game and was in decent form in the Ireland Tri-Nation Series ahead of the World Cup too.

Another in excellent form there, Soumya Sarkar, showed more glimpses of his best form with 42 from 30 balls at the top of the order against South Africa – he and Tigers icon Tamim Iqbal are capable of getting Bangladesh off to a big start.

Mustafizur Rahman picked up three wickets, meanwhile, while captain Mashrafe Mortaza will want to get back to his best form too after proving expensive in the opening game.

BAN Team Form

Bangladesh went into the World Cup 2019 after winning all four of their completed games at the Ireland Tri-Nation Series before losing their only warm-up to India.

They started the World Cup in fine style, however – Mushfiqur Rahim (78) and Shakib Al Hasan (75) leading the way, before Mahmudullah’s late hitting lifted them to 330/6 against South Africa. In reply, they took regular wickets – Mustafizur Rahman claiming 3-67 – to restrict the Proteas to 309/8 and claim a 21-run win.

Bangladesh Predicted Playing 11

Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mohammad Mithun, Mahmudullah, Mossadek Hossain, Mohammad Saifuddin/Rubel Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mashrafe Mortaza (c), Mustafizur Rahman

New Zealand Team News & Playing 11

NZ Team News

Injuries to Henry Nicholls (hamstring) and Tim Southee (calf) meant Colin Munro and Matt Henry started the opening game despite looking likely to miss out after their performances in the warm-up matches.

Both men took full advantage of their reprieve, however – Henry bowling superbly on his way to 3-29 and Munro hitting an unbeaten half-century in the ten-wicket win. New Zealand will continue with the same line-up that thrashed Sri Lanka in their opening encounter.

NZ Key Players

New Zealand’s bowlers led the way in their opening game against Sri Lanka, as Matt Henry set the tone with a wicket in the first over on his way to 3-29. Lockie Ferguson then took over to claim 3-22, while Trent Boult – ranked second in the world ODI rankings – claimed 1-44.

Martin Guptill then proved he is in bang in form with an unbeaten 73 from 51 balls to lead New Zealand to a ten-wicket win. Bangladesh will be sick of the sight of him too, after he hit two centuries when the two teams met in February.

Colin Munro also got back to form with an unbeaten 58 from 47 balls in the opening game, meaning Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor were not required. Williamson hit half-centuries in both warm-up games to prove his form, while Taylor has been one of the world’s leading ODI batsmen in recent years. The latter is third in the ICC rankings, having hit eight half-centuries and three 100s since the start of 2018.

NZ Team Form

New Zealand endured mixed fortunes in their two World Cup warm-up games. The Black Caps bowled India out for 179 to win their first match by six wickets, as Trent Boult claimed 4-33. Next up, however, they were hit for 421 on their way to a 91-run defeat to West Indies.

The bowlers were back on top in their opening World Cup fixture, however, as Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson each claimed three wickets as New Zealand dismissed Sri Lanka for 136. Martin Guptill (73*) and Colin Munro (58*) then took just 16.1 overs to seal a ten-wicket win.

New Zealand Predicted Playing 11

Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Kane Williamson (c), Ross Taylor, Tom Latham (wk), Jimmy Neesham, Colin de Grandhomme, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry, Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson

Bangladesh vs New Zealand Head to Head

New Zealand whitewashed Bangladesh in February, claiming a 3-0 series win at home. Martin Guptill scored centuries in each of the first two games as New Zealand won both by eight wickets – chasing 233 and 227 respectively. The Black Caps batted first in the final game, posting 330/6 before Tim Southee’s 6-65 helped bowl Bangladesh out once again, this time for 242.

It means New Zealand have won 24 of their 34 previous games against Bangladesh. The last of Bangladesh’s ten wins did come in England, however – the Tigers chasing 266 to win by five wickets in their ICC Champions Trophy match in 2017.
