India were asked to field first last time at Edgbaston and lost. Virat Kohli may want the first crack at the pitch this time if he wins the toss.
Though slightly cooler than it was over the weekend, Birmingham is set fair for the week ahead.
While the pitches used at Edgbaston earlier in the tournament favoured the bowlers, the pitch used last time out – as England beat India – turned out to be a great batting track.

Bangladesh have had a largely settled line-up at this Cricket World Cup, with Liton Das now slotting in at the top of the order. Mahmudullah seems to have recovered from his calf injury and is expected to feature in the starting eleven. So after a week’s break since their last fixture, Bangladesh could be unchanged from the win against Afghanistan.
Shakib-al-Hasan has been one of the star batsmen of the tournament so far, scoring centuries against West Indies and England and half-centuries against South Africa, New Zealand and Afghanistan. He has scored 75, 64, 121, 124*, 41 and 51 in his six innings so far.
Mushfiqur Rahim is also in top-form, having hit an unbeaten century against Australia and the top score of 83 last time out against Afghanistan. He has 327 runs in total.
Liton Das, Mahmudullah and Tamim Iqbal have all scored half-centuries in this tournament too, with Das boasting a strike rate of 126.21 so far from his three games.
On the bowling front, Shakib leads the way again – he has ten wickets and an economy rate of 5.57 runs per over. Mohammad Saifuddin and Mustafizur Rahman also have ten wickets each. The latter’s death bowling has been one of Bangladesh’s key weapons.
Bangladesh have won three of their six completed games so far, getting back to winning ways by seeing off Afghanistan last time out.
After back-to-back defeats to New Zealand and England, the Tigers – led by Shakib-al-Hasan’s 124* - chased 322 in 41.3 overs to beat West Indies by seven wickets.
Defeat to Australia followed, after being set 382 to win. Despite Mushfiqur Rahim’s century, they could only reach 333/8.
But Bangladesh bounced back again, posting 262/7 against Afghanistan before Shakib’s 5-29 helped them bowl Afghanistan out for just 200.

Five more wickets for Mohammed Shami against England means he should continue to lead the pace attack alongside Jasprit Bumrah. The spinners came in for some punishment in that game, but India have tended to prefer having both Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav in their XI. Rishabh Pant replaced Vijay Shankar last time out, amid much popular support, and he could continue. Shankar, meanwhile, has been ruled out of the remainder of the World Cup with a toe injury and he has been replaced in the squad by Mayank Agarwal. KL Rahul suffered a back niggle against England but he should be alright for this game. We expect India to field the same eleven from last time.
Rohit Sharma may have lacked his usual fluency against England, but India’s star opener still scored his third century of the tournament – 102 from 109 balls to anchor the chase. He now has 440 runs from his six innings.
Virat Kohli is India’s next highest run scorer, with 382 so far, having scored his fifth consecutive half-century last time out. His last five innings have seen him score 82, 77, 67, 72 and 66.
With the ball, Mohammed Shami has seized his opportunity since replacing injured Bhuvneshwar Kumar. His 5-69 against England followed back-to-back four-wicket hauls against Afghanistan and West Indies.
Shami’s 13 wickets makes him India’s top bowler so far, while Jasprit Bumrah has ten at a superb economy rate of 4.44 runs per over. Bumrah has been one of the stand-out death bowlers in the tournament. Yuzvendra Chahal was expensive last time out, but he too has ten wickets from six games so far.
India lost for the first time in this World Cup, when they could only reach 306/5 in reply to resurgent England’s 337/7. That was despite five wickets for Mohammed Shami, Rohit Sharma’s century and a fifth-consecutive half-century for Virat Kohli.
India had previously been in dominant form, posting 268/7 in a 125-run win against West Indies – Shami again the stand-out bowler with four wickets – while another four for Shami had helped seal a narrow 11-run win against Afghanistan. The only other match they had failed to win was when the rain ruined the game against New Zealand. India had bounced back well, however, thrashing Pakistan thanks to Sharma’s century.

Bangladesh won their last bilateral series against India, back in 2015, but they have since lost to India at the Champions Trophy, Asia Cup (twice) and in a warm-up match for this World Cup too. It means India have won 29 of their 35 ODI matches against the Tigers.
Their last full ODI was the Asia Cup final, which produced a low-scoring thriller in the UAE. Liton Das’ century powered Bangladesh’s total of 222 all out, which so nearly turned out to be enough. A leg-bye off the final ball of the innings earned India a three-wicket win

India are big favourites to get back to winning ways and beat Bangladesh, which is no surprise given their dominant record in this fixture.
Virat Kohli to be India’s top team batsman and India to win the match is 3.00 with Betway’s #betyourway.
Rohit Sharma to do likewise in an Indian win is 3.50.
Shakib-al-Hasan and Mohammed Shami to each take over 1.5 wickets will return 4.
Shakib to be Bangladesh’s top team batsman and top team bowler will return 15.00.
Bangladesh’s performances have been built around a few stand-out performers but their star men, like India’s, come at a big cost. The balance of the team is important therefore.
Wicket-keeper
Mushfiqur Rahim has been one of Bangladesh’s top batsmen in this tournament and has hit some good form lately too. Liton Das is an alternative, having scored a century in the last ODI between these two teams. Rishabh Pant also came into the India team last time out and is worth selecting if he can hit top form.
Batsmen
As ever, despite their high cost, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli simply have to be picked. The third batsman, if he is passed fit, could be KL Rahul – he has a point to prove at the top of the order. Kedar Jadhav is a lower-cost option, and has been called upon down the order in recent matches.
All-rounders
Shakib Al Hasan comes at a big cost but his performances so far justify that. Hardik Pandya is nine credits, meanwhile, and has enjoyed some quick-fire innings in recent games. Mossadek Hossain is a credit-saving option at eight credits, however.
Bowlers
Mohammed Shami remains a must-pick bargain at 8.5 credits for India. Mohammad Saifuddin and Mustafizur Rahman each have ten wickets in the tournament, meanwhile, and can complete your selection.
Captain/Vice-captain
Virat Kohli’s consistent form makes him hard to ignore, but Shakib Al Hasan is a better option as captain thanks to his all-round heroics so far.
BATSMEN | ALL ROUNDER | WICKET KEEPER | BOWLER |
---|---|---|---|
Virat Kohli (vc) | Shakib Al Hasan (c) | Mushfiqur Rahim | Mustafizur Rahman |
Rohit Sharma | Mossadek Hossain | Rishabh Pant | Mohammed Shami |
KL Rahul | Mohammad Saifuddin | ||
Kedar Jadhav | |||
India will want to bounce back from their first defeat of the tournament as quickly as possible, and the match against Bangladesh gives them the chance to do exactly that.
