Australia come into the Fourth Test with an unassailable 3-0 lead in the Men’s Ashes after an innings and 14 run victory in under three days over England in the Third Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. England have two more games to negotiate in this series with their aim to avoid a 5-0 whitewash. Read on as we preview this game. The Test match begins at the SCG at 10:30 local time.
Australia have been by far the best side in all of the three Tests so far in the series and fully deserve their 3-0 lead. Their bowling consistency has been as good as any seen in a Test series over recent decades.
England’s performances have been shocking in this Ashes series, particularly with the bat. They will need to show far more application in the batting department if they are to be competitive in this Test.

Travis Head, the home side’s leading run scorer in the series, will miss the Sydney Test Match as he will be part way through an isolation period. Usman Khawaja is expected to take Head’s place. Scott Boland made his Test debut in Melbourne and should keep his spot in the team after recording second innings bowling figures of 6-7.
Australia have won all three games in the series so far and have performed to a ridiculously high level, particularly in the bowling department.

England will be hoping that the new year brings new fortune for their depleted side who were beaten inside three days at the MCG during the Boxing Day Test. The visitors could well have their best available bowling attack on show in this Test but everything will be about how many runs their out-of-form batters can produce.
England have lost their last four Tests and have won only Test since February 2021. They need to make improvements in all departments, but particularly with the bat, if they are to be competitive in this Test.

Australia remain favourites to win this Test and take a 4-0 lead into the Final Test.
Both Steve Smith and Joe Root have both not made centuries in this series but have the shortest odds as the top batter for their sides in this Test.
Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and David Warner are our recommendations with the bat for Australia. Warner has hit 240 runs in the series so far.
For England, our batting tips are Joe Root, Dawid Malan and Ben Stokes. Root continues to be the only England batter who looks comfortable and able to make consistent runs in Australia.
