Australia Team News & Playing 11

AUS Team News

Adam Zampa was preferred to Nathan Lyon as Australia’s spin option for their opening game against Afghanistan. On the batting front David Warner opened, with Usman Khawaja pushed down to number three and Shaun Marsh missing out. The team is likely to be unchanged against West Indies.

AUS Key Players

Pat Cummins arrived at the World Cup in fine bowling form and immediately set about continuing that in the win against Afghanistan – claiming 3-40 from 8.2 overs. He and Mitchell Starc (1-31) starred at the top of the innings, setting the tone for Australia’s win.

With the bat, David Warner justified his selection as opener with an unbeaten 89 from 114 balls – the left-hander was in fine form at the IPL and defied the booing crowds to prove he will be a key figure in this tournament too.

Captain and fellow opener Aaron Finch hit 66 in a 96-run partnership, continuing his recent excellent ODI form.

Steve Smith fell short, but he was Australia’s form man in the lead-up to this series – another to prove his worth, like Warner, after completing his one-year ban for ball tampering.

Glenn Maxwell was mostly surplus to requirements in that opening game but he too is in great form – batting at five and offering an extra spin-bowling option as well.

AUS Team Form

Australia have hit form at just the right time, winning both of their official World Cup warm-ups and an unofficial match against the West Indies. It continued their excellent start to 2019 and they backed that up in their opening match against Afghanistan too.

Though always expected to win that game, Australia bowled well to restrict Afghanistan to 207 all out. In reply, David Warner top scored with an unbeaten 89 as Australia claimed a seven-wicket win.

Australia Predicted Playing 11

West Indies Team News & Playing 11

WI Team News

West Indies were in dominant form in their opening win against Pakistan but they did end up with a couple of injury worries on the back of that win. Andre Russell dismissed fears about his slight injury, stating it was nothing out of the ordinary, while the team also do not expect Chris Gayle’s back injury to rule him out against Australia. Expect the Windies to remain unchanged for this encounter.

WI Key Players

West Indies will hope both Andre Russell and Chris Gayle are passed fit to face Australia, as both proved their worth in the opening game. Andre Russell’s 2-4 from three overs with the ball started Pakistan’s batting collapse, while Gayle hit 50 from 34 balls to lead them to a seven-wicket win.

Russell was previously the stand-out player at the IPL to earn his international recall – his big-hitting batting among the highlights of the tournament. Gayle, meanwhile, has now hit more Cricket World Cup sixes than any other batsman to start his final tournament in style.

Elsewhere, Oshane Thomas claimed 4-27 last time out and Jason Holder 3-42, while Sheldon Cottrell’s aggressive bowling deserved more than the 1-18 he claimed.

On the batting front, Nicholas Pooran showed the big-hitting batting form that has moulded his reputation in franchise cricket lately – smashing an unbeaten 34 from 19 balls to complete the win.

Shai Hope arrived at the tournament in excellent form, meanwhile – he only scored 11 in the opening game but still averages above 50 in ODI cricket and scored 170, 109, 30, 87 and 74 in his previous five ODI innings.

WI Team Form

West Indies’ hostile fast bowling and big-hitting batting was a reminder of their teams of old as they started the World Cup in fine form. Oshane Thomas took 4-27 as Pakistan were bowled out for 105 and West Indies knocked them off in 13.4 overs for the loss of three wickets.

The Men in Maroon had previously issued a statement of intent in their final warm-up match – putting a couple of defeats to Bangladesh in Ireland behind them when they posted 421 in a 91-run thrashing of New Zealand.

West Indies Predicted Playing 11

Chris Gayle, Shai Hope (wk), Darren Bravo, Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Andre Russell, Jason Holder (c), Carlos Brathwaite, Ashley Nurse, Sheldon Cottrell, Oshane Thomas
