The hosts will be counting on Marcus Harris, Usman Khawaja, Travis Head and skipper Tim Paine to do the bulk of the scoring. Harris scored the most runs for Australia - 258 runs which included two fifties - in the recent home test series against India. Khawaja has played four tests at the Gabba from which he has a century and a half-century. Head, who was also amongst the runs in the India series, will be the team's key man in the middle order. Australia have a formidable bowling attack with the likes of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon. Cummins troubled the Indian batsmen a lot and he could dent Sri Lanka's innings early on with the new ball. Starc was not at his best against India but he is expected to bounce back with a strong showing against a lesser batting group of Sri Lanka. Lyon was Australia's best bowler in the India series with 21 wickets and the off-spinner has 31 wickets in 7 test matches at the Gabba.

Sri Lanka's batting strength resides mainly in Dimuth Karunaratne, Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Mendis and Lahiru Thirimanne. Karunaratne is currently amongst the top ten test batsmen in the world and the onus will be on him to take the team off to a good start. Chandimal is averaging 43.53 in test cricket and he will be expected to lead from the front. Mendis had cracked a century and a fifty recently in New Zealand while Thirimanne looked promising in the practice match against Cricket Australia XI. As far as bowling is concerned, the visitors will turn to pacemen Suranga Lakmal and Lahiru Kumara to take wickets upfront. Kumara was very impressive in New Zealand where he took nine wickets in two test matches and he will be threatening at the seam-friendly Gabba as well. Lakmal is one of Sri Lanka's best bowlers in the longest format and it will be crucial that he strikes early with the new ball. Dilruwan Perera is another experienced campaigner in the side and he will look to exploit Australia's weakness against spin.

Australia and Sri Lanka have played 29 test matches against each other. 17 of those have been won by the former and only 4 by the latter with the remaining 8 all having ended in draws.
Australia and Sri Lanka have faced each other twice at the Gabba in the longest format. While the first of those encounters did not produce a result, the second which dates back to November 2007 was won by Australia by an innings and 40 runs.
The last time these two countries were involved in a test series was in July-August 2016 in Sri Lanka where the hosts recorded a 3-0 clean sweep.
Matches Played: 29; Australia Won: 17; Sri Lanka Won: 4; Draw: 8
Australia are overwhelming favorites amongst the bookmakers to win this first test. The hosts are being offered at extremely short odds of 1.22 on Betway, 1.25 on Bet365 and 1.28 on Betfair. Sri Lanka begin as giant underdogs at a whopping 7.50, 7 and 7.40 with the respective bookmakers. A drawn game stands at odds of 8.50 on Betway, 9 on Bet365 and 11.50 on Betfair.
Sri Lanka have never won a test match on Australian soil but seeing India create history earlier will definitely give them some confidence going into the series. The hosts have a very inexperienced batting line-up and if the visitors are able to put in a disciplined performance with the ball, they might stand a chance of creating history themselves. But in order to achieve the same feat as India did, their batsmen too will have to be on top of their game and find ways to counter Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon who will be threatening in these conditions. Australia have won their last five tests at the Gabba and we expect them to win this pink-ball test and register their sixth straight win at this venue.
Final Verdict: Back Australia to beat Sri Lanka in the first test at 1.22 with Betway, 1.25 with Bet365 and 1.28 with Betfair.
