Who will win Auckland vs Northern Knights, Super Smash 2020?

Auckland Aces welcome bottom-of-the-table Northern Knights to Eden Park’s Outer Oval, in a match the hosts must win if they are to stay in contention for a Super Smash 2019-20 play-off place. The match takes place on January 10 and the live action starts at 16:00 local time.

Auckland have won three of their last four matches to climb into contention, but find themselves four points off the top three going into this game. They beat Central Stags last time out, having chased 195 to beat Canterbury Kings in their match before that.

Northern Knights, on the other hand, are bottom having won just twice this season. They failed to defend 219/7 in their most recent game, against Canterbury Kings, as Anton Devcich conceded six sixes in an over. They have won just twice all season, but one of those was against Auckland Aces when they met before Christmas.

Auckland Aces Team News & Playing 11

AUK Team News

Glenn Phillips and Kyle Jamieson are back for Auckland Aces, having been away with New Zealand in Australia. Phillips will take the gloves from Ben Horne, while Jamieson replaces Ross ter Braak in the squad.

AUK Key Players

Martin Guptill: Auckland Aces’ return to form has coincided with Guptill hitting his stride at the top of the order. He scored 22 last time out, following scores of 43, 42 and 83* in his three previous innings. He now has 248 runs in this year’s Super Smash tournament.

Glenn Phillips: Fresh from his test debut and a half-century against Australia, the wicket-keeper-batsman started this year’s tournament with an unbeaten century and a return to that form would be timely.

Mitchell McClenaghan: The hugely experienced left-arm paceman was back to his best last time out, with 2-30 from his four overs taking him to 226 wickets in T20 cricket in total.

AUK Team Form

Auckland Aces have won three of their last four games to keep themselves in contention for a play-off place. That includes back-to-back wins at Eden Park’s Outer Oval in their last two games in two different circumstances.

In the first match, Martin Guptill (83*) top-scored as they chased 195 to beat Canterbury Kings by seven wickets, while the most recent game against Central Stags was lower scoring. Ben Lister, Mitchell McClenaghan, Ronnie Hira and Mark Chapman all took two wickets apiece as they restricted the Stags to 138/8, and Auckland won by four wickets with three balls to spare.

Auckland Aces Predicted Playing 11

AKL vs NK Dream11 Prediction

Wicket-keeper

With Glenn Phillips back, the two top-priced wicket-keeper-batsmen are priced at 9.5 credits apiece and are both worth selecting. Phillips started the tournament with an unbeaten century, while Tim Seifert has been in consistent form for Northern Knights.

Batsmen

Martin Guptill is 10.5 credits at the top of the order for Auckland Aces, while Colin Munro – his opening partner – is ten credits. Both come at a cost, but both showed in the win against Canterbury Kings what they can do on top form. Lower down the pricing scale, Joe Carter is good value at 8.5 credits.

All-rounders

Kyle Jamieson is back for Auckland and could provide good value at 8.5 credits. After his expensive bowling last time out and generally inconsistent batting, Anton Devcich might be too expensive at 9.5 credits, but Daryl Mitchell – at the same price – is in excellent all-round form. That leaves one more space if desired, and Mark Chapman has amassed 277 points so far.

Bowlers

Chapman in would mean no room in the budget for Mitchell McClenaghan or Ish Sodhi, however. In their place, Ronnie Hira, Anurag Verma and Brett Randell are all 8.5 credits apiece and two of those three would be good picks – you do still need at least one Knight. Ben Lister, meanwhile, is just eight credits.

Captain/Vice-captain

Tim Seifert has amassed more than 500 points and has been consistent with the bat for Northern Knights, while Martin Guptill has come into similarly good form for Auckland Aces. At least one of the big-hitting openers might be worth backing. On the all-rounder front, Daryl Mitchell has produced with either bat or ball on a regular basis but nothing spectacular with either. Kyle Jamieson is worth considering on his return too, however – possibly as vice-captain with his form unknown.

Northern Knights Team News & Playing 11

NK Team News

Northern Knights must continue to do without their New Zealand international contingent, naming a 13-man squad in which Anton Devcich still features – the Knights keeping faith after he was hit for six sixes in an over last time out.

NK Key Players

Daryl Mitchell: Has generally either taken wickets or scored runs in every game so far in this tournament. He took 1-22 last time out to move to nine wickets so far, while he has 168 runs to his name too.

Tim Seifert: Hammered 75 when these teams last met and hit 74 in the most recent game against Canterbury Kings. The big-hitting wicket-keeper-batsman scored 54, 30 and 35 in his three innings in between too.

Scott Kuggeleijn: Took 3-30 when these teams last met, as well as hitting 20 with the bat to prove his credentials as a lower-order hitter too. He has six wickets in total in this year’s tournament.

NK Team Form

Northern Knights have lost their last two matches and sit bottom of the Super Smash table. They conceded 188/4 and then collapsed to 136 all out against Wellington Firebirds in their first of their two recent losses before a sensational defeat last time out too.

Tim Seifert (74 from 36 balls) and Dean Brownlie (55 from 29) helped them to 219/7 from their 20 overs, but Anton Devcich conceded six sixes in an over on his way to figures of 0-61 and the Knights lost by seven wickets with seven balls remaining.
