ADS vs SYT Betting Tips

  • Third-placed Adelaide Strikers lost their final league match to ensure they finished third and have to play in this Knockout play-off, rather than go down the Qualifier route.
  • Sydney Thunder advanced to this match by beating Hobart Hurricanes in their most recent game - Alex Hales' fine batting form continuing with another half-century.
  • The Thunder did beat the Strikers in the round-robin phase, but Adelaide won eight matches in total and also boasted the best net run rate of the eight teams.

Adelaide Strikers are favorites to win.

Adelaide Strikers vs Sydney Thunder Match Prediction, BBL 2020

Third-placed Adelaide Strikers take on the winners of the Eliminator play-off, fifth-placed Sydney Thunder, with a place in the Challenger play-off – effectively the semi-final – up for grabs to the winner. The match, at the Adelaide Oval, takes place on February 1 and starts at 19:40 local time.

Defeat in their final league game, against Hobart Hurricanes, cost Adelaide a place in the Qualifier play-off – which would have earned two shots at reaching the BBL final – but they were the better team of these two overall in the group stage.

That said, Sydney Thunder won when they last met and also beat the same Hurricanes team that had denied Adelaide second place. Alex Hales has been their key man, hitting top form with perfect timing.

Toss Prediction

Adelaide Strikers lost the toss and were asked to field first last time. They will likely want to bat first at the Adelaide Oval this time out.

Weather Report

The weather forecast is bleak throughout much of the day in Adelaide, but the rain should clear and make way for a cloudy evening by the time this game starts.

Pitch Condition

Given there were 424 runs scored in the 40 overs last time out at the Adelaide Oval, it is clear the hard, fast wicket will reward attacking batting.

Adelaide Strikers Team News & Playing 11

ADS Team News

Adelaide Strikers have an unchanged squad for the match against Sydney Thunder, and so it could be an unchanged team too. Liam O’Connor and Harry Conway are the two pushing for a starting place.

ADS Key Players

Phil Salt: The big-hitting opener has found some good form in recent matches, scoring 59 and 66 in the final two league games. He hit four half-centuries and 356 runs in total.

Rashid Khan: Going into the play-offs, only two bowlers had taken more wickets the Afghan leg-spinner’s 18 for the season.

Peter Siddle: The paceman has 17 wickets, just one behind Rashid Khan from one game less, and is relatively economical too.

ADS Team Form

Adelaide Strikers won four consecutive matches to charge up the table, most recently beating Perth Scorchers by 16 runs after Phil Salt’s 59 helped them to 181/5. Their momentum was halted in their final league game, however – losing by ten runs to Hobart Hurricanes despite posting 207/8.

Salt hit 66 from 33 balls at the top of the order, but the massive target proved too much, despite the Strikers reaching their highest ever BBL score.

Adelaide Strikers Predicted Playing 11

Jake Weatherald, Phil Salt, Alex Carey (wk), Travis Head (c), Jonathan Wells, Matthew Short, Michael Neser, Rashid Khan, Wes Agar, Peter Siddle, Billy Stanlake

ADS vs SYT Dream11 Team Prediction, Captain, Vice Captain

Wicket-keepers

Alex Carey is the top choice behind the stumps. He costs ten credits, but he is much more likely to be a match-winner with the bat than Jay Lenton for the Thunder.

Batsmen

In-form openers Phil Salt and Alex Hales are must-picks, given they have been key to their respective teams’ recent successes. Hales is ten credits and Salt is nine. Jonathan Wells is the Strikers’ top scorer this season, but other options – also at nine credits – are Usman Khawaja and Jake Weatherald, which is a tough choice to make.

All-rounders

Given their wicket-taking form, there is no question Daniel Sams and Chris Morris have to be included as all-rounders. Sams is ten credits but has 832 points this season, while Morris 9.5 credits but has now amassed 666 points. Travis Head is a top option too, but he is also 9.5 credits, and given Rashid Khan is still to come, it may be better to save a credit by opting for Michael Neser or Matthew Short instead.

Bowlers

Rashid is 9.5 credits but has 716 points to his name, thanks to his 18 wickets and occasional batting flurries. To balance the cost of these top stars, Wes Agar is superb value at eight credits, while Jonathan Cook is the same price despite his four wickets last time out. That leaves 8.5 credits and of the bowlers listed at that price, Peter Siddle looks the top choice given he is just one wicket behind Rashid this season.

Captain/vice-captain

Daniel Sams is hard to ignore for the captain pick, given he just keeps on taking wickets. Chris Morris and Rashid Khan are top alternatives, however, and that is to say nothing of Alex Hales’ batting form – and Phil Salt’s too. They are your shortlist of five, but Sams leads the way with wickets this season so he is he top choice for captain. Any of the other four could produce the goods as vice-captain.

Sydney Thunder Team News & Playing 11

SYT Team News

Sydney Thunder have an unchanged squad from their Eliminator win in Hobart, after Brendan Doggett returned to the team and Jonathan Cook claimed four wickets. After a dominant victory, in which they excelled with bat and ball, the Thunder could stick with the same 11.

SYT Key Players

Alex Hales: Found form at just the right time at the top of the order, scoring 85, 63, 47 and 60 in his last four innings. His most recent knock took him past the 500-run mark for this year’s BBL.

Daniel Sams: Top of the wicket-taking charts, the all-rounder claimed two more scalps in the win against Hobart and has now taken 27 in 15 matches.

Chris Morris: Claimed 3-27 last time out to move to 18 wickets for the season, continuing to prove his quality with ball. He now has 255 wickets in 203 T20 innings.

SYT Team Form

With Alex Hales in fine form, Sydney Thunder have returned to winning form just in time. First they beat Perth Scorchers in a rain-reduced match – reaching 97/3 in 11.4 overs thanks to Hales’ 47 from 27 balls to claim victory with two balls to spare.

Then, Hales hit 60 and shared a century partnership with Usman Khawaja in a total of 197/5 in the Eliminator against Hobart Hurricanes. Jonathan Cook then claimed 4-21 and Chris Morris 3-27 as they bowled the Hurricanes out for 140 in reply.

Adelaide Strikers vs Sydney Thunder Head to Head

Sydney Thunder won the one completed match between these teams this season – the other was a no result – but Adelaide Strikers still have the better overall record with six wins to the Thunder’s five. The last match at the Adelaide Oval, on New Year’s Eve, was a thriller as Usman Khawaja (63) and Callum Ferguson (73) lifted the Thunder to 168/5. Jake Weatherald hit 52 to kick-start the reply before Rashid Khan’s 40 from 18 balls kept the Strikers in contention. He and Wes Agar were both run out from the final two balls, however, as the Strikers finished short on 165/9.
