In the latest developments, Aussie pacer and Test captain, Pat Cummins has been appointed as the new ODI captain of Australia and will lead the side to the next Cricket World Cup in 2023 in India. Cummins has picked the baton from previous skipper Aaron Finch who stepped down from the ODI captaincy and announced his retirement from the ODI format last month.

Cricket Australia preferred to go with a two captain approach rather than three captains for each format. Pat Cummins will lead the Test and ODI team and Finch will captain the T20I side and currently lead the team in the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. Finch captained the Aussie side to clinch their first ever T20 World Cup title last year.

On being elevated to the leadership level in the ODI format, Cummins said, “I have thoroughly enjoyed playing under Finchy and have learnt an enormous amount from his leadership. They are significant shoes to fill although we are extremely fortunate to have a one-day squad with a huge amount of experience.”

Other than Pat Cummins, David Warner and Alex Carey were also short-listed to lead the ODI side after Finch. Carey is currently the vice-captain in the ODI format and has led the side on the West Indies tour when Aaron Finch was ruled out due to injury.

Pat Cummins has been one of the key bowlers for Australia for a long time now. In 73 ODIs, Cummins has picked 119 wickets with an impressive economy of 5.21.
