As the clouds are looming over Rohit Sharma’s inclusion in the 5th Test match, opener batter Mayank Agarwal has been called up to take a flight to the UK and join the Indian Test squad. Agarwal will travel on Monday and is expected to join the team camp by the evening.

Rohit Sharma’s health concerns are making his chances doubtful to be part of the rescheduled 5th and final Test match of the 5-match Test series which took place in 2021. The last match was cancelled due to some reasons and rescheduled along with the white-ball tour which will take place next month. India’s tour of England will kick-off with the 5th Test match and will be followed by 3 T20Is and 3 ODIs.

Mayank Agarwal Recent Form

Mayank Agarwal was earlier overlooked by the selectors as he looked little out of form in the IPL 2022 where he led the Punjab Kings franchise. He scored 196 runs in 14 matches at an average of 16.33. He last played a Test against Sri Lanka in the home series where he scored 59 runs in 2 matches.

Bumrah’s chances to lead the Indian Test team

With Rohit Sharma’s situation, there are also questions raising over who will lead the Indian Test side for this crucial Test match. KL Rahul is also ruled out of the England tour as he is scheduled to go abroad to treat his groin injury. There are speculations that Jasprit Bumrah can be elevated to the captaincy level if Rohit Sharma will not play and Bumrah can be the only pacer skipper after Kapil Dev to lead the Indian Test side. Kapil Dev last led the team in March 1987.

Mayank Agarwal Test Stats

Agarwal made his Test debut in December 2018 against Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground. Since then he has played 21 Tests in which he has scored 1488 runs at an average of 41.33. He has a highest score of 243 in the format.
