After playing three Asia Cup games against each other in August and September, India and Pakistan are now drawn in the same group at the T20 World Cup 2022, and will play each other in their opening games this Sunday. The match, taking place on 23 October, will go a long way to determining which of the two cricketing giants have a chance at topping Group 2 in the Super 12 phase of the T20 World Cup 2022, and which side will be fighting for survival over the next fortnight.

We take a look at a range of India vs. Pakistan head-to-head statistics across T20Is and World Cup matches, ahead of this mouth watering encounter on the weekend.

Overall T20I Record Between India and Pakistan

As cricket fans will know, a match between India and Pakistan is a rare but treasured thing.

The combination of India and Pakistan playing infrequently due to tensions between the two countries, and T20 being the newest format of cricket, mean that India and Pakistan have met only 11 times before in T20Is.

Across these encounters, India has the significant upper hand, having won seven of the matches compared to Pakistan’s three, with one no result.

  Won Lost No Result
India 7 3 1
Pakistan 3 7 1

Looking at the overall record between these sides, one statistic jumps out. Of the 10 T20I matches played to completion between India and Pakistan, 80% have been won by the chasing side.

Last T20I Meeting Between India and Pakistan

Between 2016 and 2021, India and Pakistan did not play a single T20I match.

However, recent times have treated fans to a feast of India vs. Pakistan clashes, with the two teams meeting four times in the last 12 months, and three times since late August 2022.

Pakistan won the last India vs. Pakistan T20I match, winning by eight wickets with one ball remaining on September 4, 2022.

In this match, part of the Super Four phase of the Asia Cup 2022, India chose to bat first. They posted a competitive score of 181/7, with KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma both making rapid scores of 28, before Virat Kohli starred with 60 from 44. The rest of the batting line up were unable to maintain the momentum however, as Shadab Khan took 2/31 and Mohammad Nawaz was tight with 1/25 from his four overs.

Pakistan then replied and looked comfortable through out, with the team building around Mohammad Rizwan’s 71 off 51. Mohammad Nawaz added to his performance with the ball by slapping 42 off 20, before Iftikar Ahmed hit the winning runs with a ball to spare in the last over.

Previous T20I Meetings Between India and Pakistan

Prior to their last meeting in September, India had had the upper hand over Pakistan in T20Is.

Interestingly, every single one of the last five matches between India and Pakistan has been won by the chasing side, and the majority of these have been comfortable chases as well.

Pakistan Have the Upper Hand over India Recently

However, just focusing on the big numbers would skew reality in favour of India.

The reality is, last time India and Pakistan happened at a World Cup, Pakistan won. Same goes for the last time these two teams met in T20I cricket, that was also a win to Pakistan.

Despite the fact that these two games are literally the only two Pakistan have won against India, there’s no denying the fact that Pakistan are 2-1 against India in T20s over the last 12 months. Both of these wins were also relatively comfortable, with wins of ten wickets and five wickets against India.

Whoever Chases Wins

Bottom line is, whoever wins the toss on Sunday will want to be chasing.
