Cricket West Indies and Caribbean Premier League has jointly unveiled a brand new 60-ball tournament named ‘The 6ixty’. The first edition of The 6ixty will take place between August 24 and 28. It will feature 6 men’s teams and 3 women’s teams.

Each team will get 10-over innings and after the fall of 6th wicket, the team will be considered all out. The 6ixty will be the first ever 10-over tournament by a full-member of the ICC. Before this tournament, the United Arab Emirates ICC sanctioned Abu Dhabi T10 league and European Cricket also have a few competitions of 10-over format.

There are certain new rules which will be implied in The 6ixty tournament:

  • After the fall of the 6th wicket, the team will be considered all out.
  • The bowling side will bowl from one end for 5 overs then switch to the other hand for the next 30 balls.
  • 2 Powerplay overs will be given to the teams. The batting side can unlock the 3rd Powerplay if they smash 2 sixes in the first 12 balls.
  • If the bowling team fails to bowl 10 overs in 45 minutes then as a penalty, a player will be removed from the fielding for the last 6 balls of the innings.

Unveiling The 6ixty, CPL CEO Pete Russell said, “It's just about trying to generate excitement and interest. It's like what's going on with golf right now - you have to look at things through a different lens sometimes. This is about a totally new audience. We're very much going after the younger generation.”

The shorter formats of the game are gaining a lot of popularity these days. England’s venture The Hundred has also been a hit among the cricket fans, which is a 100-ball tournament and features international players from around the world.
