Disney Hotstar has won the IPL media rights for TV broadcast for the 2023-2027 cycle in the e-auction of the IPL media rights on Monday. The broadcasters have won the rights at a whopping price of ₹23,575 crore while Mukesh Ambani’s media company Viacom18 has bagged the digital rights of IPL for 2023-2027 cycle at a price of ₹20,500 crore.

With this price, the value of each IPL game in this cycle comes to a staggering ₹107.5 crore making Indian Premier League the 2nd most lucrative sports league in the world after National Football League. The per game value at NFL is currently at ₹133 crore.

In the last IPL media rights auction in 2018, the rights were sold for ₹16,347 crore. The value of the rights have almost tripled since the last auction.

The BCCI has divided the media rights into 4 packages naming them Package A, B, C and D. Package A has the TV broadcast rights in India, Package B has digital rights, Package C has non-exclusive digital rights for 18 matches while Package D offers rights for overseas broadcasting.

The rights were sold for a total of 410 matches across 5 seasons from 2023-27. The break-up of the matches are as follows - 74 matches for 2023 and 2024. 84 matches in 2025 and 2026, and 94 matches in 2027.

With the total amount of ₹44,075 crore from 2 packages and an already received bid of ₹2,000 crore for Package C means that the BCCI has raked in a total of around ₹46,000 crore and will get more on Tuesday.

With 2 more Packages set to be auctioned on Tuesday, the per match value of the IPL might be able to beat the NFL’s value and break the record.

With this year’s media rights auction, the monopoly of one broadcasting company has ended in the IPL. Let’s see who bags the Packages C and D.
