In the latest development, Asia Cup 2022 has been shifted to United Arab Emirates (UAE) after Sri Lanka pulled out from hosting the T20 tournament due to the on-going political unrest in the island nation.
BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has confirmed the news saying, “Asia Cup will be in UAE, as it is the only place where there won’t be rains.”
On Wednesday, Sri Lanka Cricket informed the Asian Cricket Council that they are not in a state to host the upcoming mega cricketing tournament Asia Cup 2022 due to the tense economic and political situation. The announcement came after SLC postponed the 3rd edition of Lanka Premier League as well.
Due to the tense situation, the 2nd Test match of the on-going Test series between Sri Lanka and Pakistan has been shifted from Colombo to Galle.
Asia Cup 2022 is scheduled to commence on August 27 and the final will take place on September 11. The tournament will be played in T20 format and this is the 2nd time Asia Cup will be played in this format. The 2016 edition of Asia Cup was also played in T20 format and India lifted the trophy that year.
The last edition of the Asia Cup in 2018 also took place in UAE. India defeated Bangladesh in the finals to clinch their 7th Asia Cup title.
