New Zealand left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel has been voted as the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for December 2021. The 33-year old Kiwi player has achieved a rare feat of taking 10 wickets in an innings in the 2nd Test match against India in December.
What is more interesting about his achievement is that Patel created history in Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai which also happens to be the city of his birth. With this, Ajaz Patel becomes the 3rd player ever after Jim Laker and Anil Kumble in the history of cricket to take all 10 wickets in a single innings.
Mitchell Starc and Mayank Agarwal were also nominated for the ICC award. Starc was nominated for his brilliant performance in the Ashes and Agarwal scored 276 runs in Tests at an average of 69.00. But Patel’s milestone was certainly remarkable and will be remembered for years to come.
As far as his stats are concerned, Ajaz Patel has just started off his Test career journey and he has taken 43 wickets in just 11 Test matches. Along with 10 wickets in 1st innings in that Test match, Ajaz Patel also took 4 wickets in the 2nd innings so his best bowling figures in a match is 14/225.
