Date | April 1st, 2023 |
Time | 3.30 PM IST, 10:00 AM GMT, 3:30 PM Local Time |
Venue | Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, Mohali |
Both Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders had a poor outing last season as they failed to reach the playoffs. PBKS finished seventh with 7 wins in 14 matches while Kolkata could only manage 6 in 14 outings. Kolkata has tasted IPL success before, having won the trophy twice but Punjab is yet to win the title even once and it’s big time that they step up and get their hands on the trophy.
Both teams are very strong on paper but have been left reeling with injuries to key players. Jonny Bairstow for PBKS and Shreyas Iyer for KKR have been ruled out of the tournament. For Punjab, Liam Livingstone is also set to miss the first game along with Kagiso Rabada. Still, both teams are even and we should have a good game on our hands.
The Mohali surface offers some help for the fast bowlers. The pace, however, helps the batters as the ball flies quickly off the bat.
The weather is not very promising as there is more than a 50 per cent chance of rain on the match day.

The veteran Indian batter has been one of the most consistent performers of the Indian Premier League. Dhawan has consistently got runs for whichever team he has played for. In the absence of players like Bairstow and Livingstone, Dhawan will hold the key for his team.
Sam Curran is a valuable player to have. Mohali is a wicket where Curran can get the ball to move and pick a few wickets. He is also a very handy batter and can be used as a floater so he is a good pick for the team.
Nitish Rana has been given the responsibility of leading Kolkata. Rana has been the backbone of KKR batting over the years and once again will have to contribute heavily if KKR have to make an impact in the tournament.
The young pacer impressed one and all in IPL 2022 and also earned his maiden India cap because of the same. Arshdeep will be eyeing to replicate his IPL 2022 success in the coming season.
Gurbaz has been a great player for Afghanistan and T20 teams in recent times. He recently played in the T20I series against Pakistan and delivered a good show. The destructive opener will be the one to watch out for from the KKR team.
