Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings had contrasting outings in the last season. CSK had a poor season as they failed to make it to the playoffs, finishing ninth on the points table. Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans were brilliant throughout and became only the second team to win the IPL trophy in their debut season.
Both teams have made a few changes to the squads for this year. Gujarat has roped in Kiwi veteran Kane Williamson while Ben Stokes has joined Chennai Super Kings. Both teams will be eyeing a winning start to the season.
Narendra Modi Stadium has one of the best pitches to bat. The ball comes on nicely here and batters get full value for their shots. The pacers get some help early on while spinners may get some turn in the second innings.
There is plenty of rain predicted on the eve on the match but the weather is clear on the match day, with the temperature hovering around mid-20s.
Shubman Gill, Wriddhiman Saha, Kane Williamson, Hardik Pandya, Vijay Shankar, Matthew Wade, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Shivam Mavi, Mohammed Shami, Joshua Little
Devon Conway, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Moeen Ali, Shivam Dube, Ambati Rayudu, Ben Stokes, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni, Deepak Chahar, Tushar Deshpande, Matheesha Pathirana
There are a lot of players who will miss the game due to injury or other issues. CSK pacer Mukesh Choudhary is injured and he is very unlikely to play. For Gujarat, David Miller won’t be available for the first game due to injuries.
Both of the group stage matches were won by Gujarat Titans last year with a three wicket win in Pune and a seven wicket win in Mumbai. This will be the first ever GT vs CSK clash on this ground which is the home ground of Gujarat Titans.

Batters | Shubman Gill (VC), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Kane Williamson |
All-rounders | Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya (C), Moeen Ali |
Bowlers | Rashid Khan, Deepak Chahar, Mohammed Shami |
Shubman Gill has been in remarkable form across formats for India and he will be eyeing a stellar show in IPL. Gill played a key role in Gujarat’s run to the title last year and will once again be key for the franchise.
Ruturaj Gaikwad has lost his place in the Indian team but IPL 2023 is an opportunity to get into the reckoning again. Gaikwad was CSK’s leading run-scorer last year. He is a top player and made a name for himself after a good show for the franchise. The team needs him to come good again.
Hardik Pandya will have to replicate his success from last year’s IPL if Gujarat has to win back-to-back titles. Pandya brings a lot of value to the team owing to his amazing all-round skills.
Mohammed Shami is a lethal Test bowler but he is very underrated in limited-overs cricket. Shami can be unplayable at times when on song and he will be leading Gujarat’s pace attack. Shami can turn out to be a match-winner for Gujarat Titans.
Without a doubt, Ravindra Jadeja will be the biggest match-winner for CSK. Jadeja has become a very stable batter in the middle order and gives nothing away with the ball in hand as well. Jadeja will be key for CSK.
