Venue | Perth Stadium, Perth |
The defending champs Australia were thrashed by New Zealand in their first game of the T20 World Cup. They now face Sri Lanka in a must-win situation. Australia cannot afford to lose another game as that will smash their chances of reaching the semis.
Also, Sri Lanka and England, other teams of the group have earned big wins in their first matches of Super 12, so Australia need to fetch a big win in order to get their net run rate back on track.
Sri Lanka have been inconsistent in recent times but they have found a way to bounce back with their back against the ball. After suffering a shock loss to Namibia in the first match, they have won three games on the trot. The team is well capable to upset any team on their day.
Perth is one of the fastest surfaces in Australia which has a lot of bounce and carry. The conditions won’t be easy to bat for the teams, however, Australia have played all their cricket in similar conditions so they will be more comfortable than Sri Lanka playing in Perth.
There are less chances of rain in Perth as compared to other parts of Australia. However, it’s wintertime in Australia so the temperatures will be low at around 10-15 degrees.
AJ Finch(C), David Warner, Tim David, MP Stoinis, MR Marsh, GJ Maxwell, MS Wade, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, A Zampa, Mitchell Starc
Kusal Mendis (wk), Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, Ashen Bandara/Pathum Nissanka, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Dasun Shanaka (c), Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Maheesh Theekshana/Kasun Rajitha/Pramod Madushan, Binura Fernando, Lahiru Kumara
Australia are likely to stick with the same combination they played in the last game. However, Sri Lanka may make a few changes. Pathum Nissanka, who missed the game against Ireland due to injury, is likely to be back in the team if he has recovered. Also, the team may be tempted to play an extra pacer in Kasun Rajitha or Pramod Madushan in place on Theekshana due to the spicy nature of Perth surface.
Australia lead Sri Lanka 15-10 in head-to-head encounters

Kusal Mendis has picked up great form just when Sri Lanka needed him to step up. Mendis has now hit two back-to-back fifties. He played a brilliant 68-run knock off 43 balls in the last game against Ireland.
When in comes to T20Is, there is hardly a player better than David Warner. The southpaw has blown hot and cold in the tournament so far but he likes to bat on pitches where the ball comes on nicely onto the bat. Also, he is good off the backfoot thus Perth conditions are ideal for him to score big.
Even though the conditions won’t be ideal for him, Hasaranga can still trouble the Aussies with his variations. Hasaranga has been in tremendous form in the tournament and has taken nine wickets in four games.
Marcus Stoinis has been a brilliant batter for Australia in recent times. While he hasn’t smashed a big knock, he has played plenty of cameos when Australia needed them. Also, he is a fast bowling all-rounder and the pitch in Perth will be ideal for him to pick a few wickets as well.
While each of the three Australian pacers has the skills to run through a batting lineup, Hazlewood is more likely to do that given his accuracy in his line and length. Hazlewood is also the most consistent of the three Aussie pacers.
